Endangered (right) whales discovered off Greenland coast
National Post ^ | May 25, 2009 | Randy Boswell

Scientists have discovered that a pod of North Atlantic right whales -- possibly an offshoot of Canada's critically endangered population -- has returned to waters off southern Greenland after 200 years, raising new hopes for the species but also concerns about a coming clash between nature and commerce at the doorstep of the unlocked Northwest Passage.

Only about 400 individual right whales are known to migrate annually along the Atlantic coast between Nova Scotia and Florida, a tiny remnant of a once-robust species that was hunted almost to extinction by the early 20th century. They were named for being the "right" whales to hunt because they were relatively easy to subdue.

Same pod that was off of Cape Cod recently? I read that they had over 30 calves.

“With melting Arctic sea ice expected to soon unlock an important new international shipping lane past southern Greenland and up through Canada’s Northwest Passage, scientists are warning that the newly discovered whale habitat would be in the path of oil tankers, ocean liners and other marine traffic moving through the polar region.”

They had to include global warming in the article. It is required these days.

"raising new hopes for the species but also concerns about a coming clash between nature and commerce at the doorstep of the unlocked Northwest Passage."

The Northwest passage isn't unlocked by any stretch of the imagination. There have always been years when there was no ice there, dating back to the late 1700's, long before the "global warming" scam. In fact the Brits were concerned that the Canada's could be attacked by the Soviets at the time, but learned that shifting winds closed that passage just as fast as shifting winds opened it.

Funny how supposedly "modern" and more intelligent "scientists" ( a word used to hide the fact that they are nothing but anti-human tree huggers) can't figure that out, but claim ice is melting at -50f.

Did I mention the time I was sunbathing at an Atlantic beach, and GreenPeace tried to drag me out to sea?

Good news! Now that they are coming back we can start to harvest them again! Do it selectively with hand tossed harpoons to give em a chance. Make whaling as dangerous as catching Alaskan king crabs. BUT Whale oil is great stuff! Do it on a limited basis naturally, but they should be harvested to help mankind.

In fact the Brits were concerned that the Canada's could be attacked by the Soviets at the time, but learned that shifting winds closed that passage just as fast as shifting winds opened it.

That would be the Russians, a traditional rival of the Brits in the "Great Game". The Soviet Union didn't exist until 1922, although the Bolshevik Revolution (aka October Revolution) was in 1917.
