Republicans, Let's Play Grown-Up
WSJ ^ | 5/29/09 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 05/29/2009 7:02:13 AM PDT by pissant

"Let's play grown-up." When I was a child, that's what we said when we ran out of things to do like playing potsie or throwing rocks in the vacant lot. You'd go in and take your father's hat and your mother's purse and walk around saying, "Would you like tea?"

And that's what the GOP should do right now: play grown-up.

The Democrats in the White House have been doing it since January, operating with a certain decorum, a kind of assumption as to their natural stature. Obamaland is very different from the last Democratic administration, Bill Clinton's. The cliché is true: White House staffs reflect their presidents. Mr. Clinton's staff was human, colorful, messy, slightly mad. They had pent-up energy after 12 years of Republican rule, and they believed their own propaganda that Republicans were wicked. They were oafish: One dragooned a government helicopter to go play golf. President Obama's staff is far less entertaining. They're smooth, impeccable, sophisticated, like the boss. They don't hate Republicans but think they're missing a few chips (empathy, logic, How Things Really Work). It is true they don't know what they don't know, but what they do know (how to quietly seize and hold power, for instance—they now run the American auto industry), they know pretty well.

But back to Sonia Sotomayor, which is my subject.

(snip)

Some, and they are idiots, look at Judge Sotomayor and say: attack, attack, kill. A conservative activist told the New York Times, "We need to brand her." Another told me a fight is needed to excite the base.

Excite the base? How about excite a moderate, or interest an independent? How about gain the attention of people who aren't already on your side?

How anyone can watch a Gibbs press briefing and still claim this is beyond comprehension.

“President Obama’s staff is far less entertaining. They’re smooth, impeccable, sophisticated, like the boss...”

Next question...

Where has playing “grown up” gotten us, Peg?

I don’t read the b!tch anymore. After what the elitist piece of crap did to Sarah Palin I vowed I’d never read her again, and I haven’t.

I hate the Left, but I have a special fiery burning hatred for those on the Right who betray conservativism.

Shut up, Peggy.

The only way I see anything you scribble is on FR.

Obama plays at being a grown up? Finally something I can agree with Peggy about!

but it is also a wound for the Democrats, the worst kind, a self-inflicted one. They damaged our national political culture and lowered their own standing with their assault, and their victory left them looking not strong and uncompromising but mean and ferocious. And on some level they know it.

They don't care about our "national political culture" if it gets them what they want. They got Kennedy instead of Bork. That makes it worth it for them. Miss Noonan has yet to realize that Obama and his crew are not posing out of good will but out of mere calculation.

The Democrats in the White House have been doing it since January, operating with a certain decorum, a kind of assumption as to their natural stature.

If Obama was operating with a “certain decorum, a kind of assumption as to his natural stature” he wouldn’t have to preface nearly every talk with statements like “I inherited this mess”, “We didn’t cause this mess”. It is his LACK OF STATURE that causes him to respond as such, because he is worried about people blaming him for the problems.

Can anyone seriously read this column and still wonder why the print media is doing so poorly?

"the GOP should do right now: play grown-up. The Democrats in the White House have been doing it since January..."

Lost me right there! Grown-ups don't take daddy's credit cards and spend $2 trillion dollars in 100 days. Nor do grown-ups run around saying "I won, I won... I can do what I want, I won, I won..."

Noonan has been an idiot for a while.

But on the topic of this article. We do need to attack her, the problem is when you say “attack” the message of why she needs to be attacked gets lost. We don’t have a leader (Rush stepped down :-) ). But seriously the way we currently herd our cats is by yelling loud enough that they all hear and move in that direction. It’s not exactly a subtle strategy that keeps the Rats from knowing what we plan to do and how we plan to do it.

Ideally we would have one voice that is CONSERVATIVE in thought but eloquent in delivery (oh and that voice would agree with me all the time). This is the bad part of being in the minority...too many people are looking to become the “leader” to set themselves up for political power.

Peg sounds almost funny now, her efforts to justify her swooning for Hussein sound ridiculous.

We are supposed to believe her nonsense...instead of our own eyes????

She has jumped the shark.
