Europe's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will start smashing its first particles in October and run through the winter as a rival U.S. facility closes in on the Higgs boson, or "God particle."
Atom-smashers are normally shut down in the winter to avoid incurring peak electricity charges, and the decision to keep the $6 billion accelerator, the world's largest and most powerful scientific instrument, going will cost around $20 million in additional running costs.
But the move, a first for the CERN particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland, should advance the discovery of the Higgs boson -- the elusive particle that is predicted to give matter its mass.
If it exists, the LHC should find it, but the rival, less powerful, U.S. accelerator at Fermilab outside Chicago could still get there first.
Lyn Evans, project leader for the LHC at CERN, told The Times: "This will give us a shot much earlier. I always wish Fermilab good luck, but they will have a hard job now.
"I've no doubt that they will publish more limits for the Higgs, but it's going to be very hard for them to go much further. That's going to be a job for the LHC."

Think of the advantages of being first-to-market!
Both accelerator teams would like to be the first one to find the Higgs I think..... though I think the LHC might be the one particle collider with enough energy.
You can’t find ‘infinity’.
They’re a little late to the game. I swallowed a higgs particle last night and ended up in Sagittarius.
They should change the name to the *Nimrod Collider*
GOD’S REACTION TO MANKIND’S DISOBEDIENCE
Genesis 11:5-8
God, knowing the intent of the people, directly intervened and confounded the languages of the people which caused a great confusion.
Man had again disobeyed God and deliberately congregated in great cities. To make keep the people congregated in these areas the leaders plotted to invent a false religion to worship idols who were not so demanding on mankind.
In Genesis 11:7, note that the verse says, “let US go down and confound their language”. Here again is the use of the plural word, Elohim for naming God. Since else where the Bible clearly teaches there is but one God this is evidence of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
God then “confounded” the languages of all the people on earth. Genesis 10:5, states that God divided them in their lands by their family, and nation. The confounding of their languages was done in orderly fashion by God and families and tribes were given the same language
Hmmmmm
The early bird gets the Nobel Prize.
What if the theory’s wrong?
“What if the theorys wrong?”
Then the collisions would produce something other than the Higg’s. It’s a matter of having a high enough energy, therefore a short enough wavelength and high enough resolution to detect it.
discovery of the Higgs boson — the elusive particle that is predicted to give matter its mass.
I remember when I discovered the Christine Higgs bosom, it
gave me additional mass, where it came from I still don’t know, keeps happening though.
“Could you imagine spending that much money if it turns out to be wrong? It would be a very cool-looking paperweight.”
The purpose of the LHC was not to find the higg’s boson. It is to do experiments to investigate high-energy physics... trying to detect the higg’s is one of the bigger ones though....
It makes me think of Dan Brown and “Angels and Demons” and the God Particle in that story that was the central thread throughout...

Kewl pic, makes me wish I could be there
on Acid when they turn it on.
To beat the other guy!
Thanks, Tara! My cousin used to be a particle beam operator at Fermi.
Are they planting enough trees to use that much energy?
Carbon footprints anyone?
