Democratic Senate campaign chief Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) today issued a stern warning to Republicans up for reelection in 2010: Vote against Sonia Sotomayor at your own peril. Reid also expressed confidence that Democrats would not vote against Sotomayor. “I dare any one of them" to oppose her.
Menendez, meanwhile, stuck to the political angle, blasted some critics of Sotomayor for what he said were deplorable attacks.
His blast at vulnerable GOP senators was the most purely political statement from a Democrat yet in a week of Sotomayor visits to Senate offices.
"I think that when all the senators have to cast a vote on Judge Sotomayor, if they select a negative vote, they will have to explain how it is you cast a no vote on someone who has great intellect, on someone who has been committed to the rule of law, who has been committed to precedent, and who has many times decided in ways that are adverse to what her personal experiences would be."
Menendez, who is in his first cycle as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, made his comments after a 30-minute closed door meeting with Sotomayor.
The New Jersey senator praised Sotomayor as an accomplished jurist who was committed to ruling on precedent and who was adverse to judicial activism, as some conservative voices have suggested.
Also this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) met with Hispanic leaders to rally support for Sotomayor. He was sporting a "Sonia" button for his meeting, and says Repubilcans seem to be “grasping at straws” in battling over her nomination.
Reid also said he did not want to set an "an arbitrary deadline" for Sotomayor's confirmation, a much more flexible statement compared with the push by Judiciary Chairman Pat Leah (D-Vt.) for a faster confirmation schedule “Things could come up you just don’t know. .. and I don’t want anyone subjecting this good woman to criticism because of some arbitrary deadline that I set.”
Reid said he believed the "empathy" quality remains an important aspect of the Sotomayor biography.
“One of the qualifications Republicans said that Justice Thomas had was empathy,” Reid said about Clarence Thomas’ 1991 confirmation hearings. “They didn’t see that as a negative, they thought that as a plus.”
"I have seen the most appalling language used as it relates to this nominee," he said, referring to critism from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and others. "I would just say, look where it comes from."
Gingrich has since walked back some of his harshest statements on Sotomayor, and Menendez's political counterpart, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas), has called on fellow GOP senators to back off the "racist" line of attack on the judge.
Poor little Harriet Soto-Meiers.
What a tool.
Who gets punished depends upon how long the people’s news outlets can conceal the upcoming economic disaster that’s lurking around the bend.
Perhaps the dhimmis might start worrying. Ain’t no way the Obamaloon’s silly schemes are going to work.
Statements like this always reinforces my opinion that very damn few , if any, demoncrapic senators vote for the right way, they just vote to get reelected.
Mr. Menendez,
Perhaps you should pay heed to the tea parties. Methinks they’re a little more POed and organized than you give them credit.
Ignore at your own peril...
If the GOP does not expose her then they will become extinct
All any Republican has to do is bring up all the Hispanics that he or she DID vote for!
Also, why pull out the “race card” at this point, unless they know that there might be a problem?
Menendez is a RACIST....a member of the RACIST PARTY....and wants to make sure everyone stays on the PLANTATION!!!
LOL! Menendez and his fantasy world surface again.
Because you tell the truth about a racist bigot? How does that work?
Did BJ Clinton bury the truth that deep, or cannot normal people read anymore.
I want to get a point off my chest. All the media and the dims are promoting Sotomayor as Hispanic and that insulting her will result in Hispanics not liking the Republicans very much. Well Sotomayor is Puerto Rican. Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans and many other flavors of Hispanics do not care for Puerto Ricans. Mexican Americans were dissed by Dims during the Bush administration with little negative impact. Now they are pushing a Puerto Rican as the preeminent example of Hispanic. Not a very popular image among non-Puerto Rican Americans.
His threats remind me of WWF wrestlers in their post game interviews.
Tell you what, GOP. If you go quietly and allow a radical like Sotomayor to pass without a fight, I give up on you. You’re a party without a purpose except to be lap-dogs to the Democrats.
We’re already being punished with by the voters with this irresponsible and airheaded Administration, i.e., Obama. Do your worst Menendez, how much worse can it be?
The guy can't even be original? Chuckie Schmucky said that already.......Anyway:
Very correct.
He might very well have been a RINO, but too bad Tom Keane Jr. didn’t win over this s**t bag of a ‘senator’.
