Red Barchetta
Rush Discography ^ | 1981 | Neal Peart

Posted on 06/08/2009 11:34:33 AM PDT by CharlieOK1

My uncle has a country place, that no one knows about. He says it used to be a farm before the Motor Law.

And on Sundays, I elude the "Eyes" and hop the turbine freight - to far outside the wire where my white-haired uncle waits.

Jump to the ground as the turbo slows to cross the borderline. Run like the wind as excitement shivers up and down my spine.

Down in his barn, my uncle preserved for me an old machine - for 50 odd years. To keep it as new has been his dearest dream.

I strip away the old debris that hides the shining car. A brilliant red Barchetta from a better vanished time.

Fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar! Tires spitting gravel I commit my weekly crime.

Wind in my hair, shifting and drifting. -- mechanical music, -- adrenalin surge.....

Well weathered leather, hot metal and oil, the scented country air. Sunlight on chrome, the blur of the landscape, every nerve aware!

Suddenly ahead of me, across the mountain side, a gleaming alloy air car shoots towards me two lanes wide.

I spin around with shrieking tires to run the deadly race; go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase.

Drive like the wind, straining the limits of machine and man. Laughing out loud with fear and hope, I've got a desperate plan.

At the one lane bridge I leave the giants stranded at the riverside. Race back to the farm to dream with my uncle at the fireside.

Great song from a great album.
Easily one of my top 10 favorite albums (Moving Pictures.)
Limelight, Witch Hunt, Vital Signs and of course, Tom Sawyer.

What the heck is an alloy air car?

An automobile that is made of metal alloys, and, given the Motor Law reference, runs on air?

I think that is what Obama is shooting for with his Cafe standards. Cars that run on air.

You'll find out after they pass the "Motor Law." ;o)

Song was supposedly inspired by the story A Nice Morning Drive, by Richard S. Foster.

Great song by a great band. Took my teen boys to see Rush last year and hope to do so again!

Don't forget The Camera Eye, great album, was listening to it this morning on the way to work. Apparently they don't make musicians like Neil, Geddy, and Alex anymore by the sad state of music today. With the exception of Dream Theater.

Use your imagination when listening to this great song, brother!
Cars are apparently illegal in this futuristic song.
The freedom-loving nephew is apparently being chased by authorities operating a wide hovercraft (crafted of alloy) too wide to cross the single-lane bridge needed to return to the safety of his uncle's farm.
The drums sound fantastic in this classic Rush tune.

Excellent song!

I’ve actually been listening to that CD in my car for about 3 weeks now.

It is very timely and unfortunately, it’s where we are headed.

Never has there been a band made up of musicians so at the top of their respective crafts. Geddy's easily a top-5 bassist of all time. Neil's second -- maybe -- only to Keith Moon as a drummer, and I've always thought Alex was a very underrated guitarist.

I'm pretty sure Neil wrote all the lyrics -- something you don't see from drummers. I'm told he's an Objectivist.

Ah! Man, sometime you can hear a song a hundred times before you know what it’s about. Thanks.

'...they don't make musicians like Neil, Geddy, and Alex anymore..."
Exactly. These three guys have more musical talent than all of the "boy bands" of the last decade combined.

Neil Peart is a big fan of Ayn Rand. Their label in Canada is ANTHEM and their concept album 2112 is based on the Rand novel of the same name. I had my Slingerlands made as a copy of the Black finish Brass plated hardware set he used on Farewell to Kings.
