He's catching hell from his sponsors and the corporate brass. If he really wanted to apologize, he'd get on a plane to Alaska and personally apoligize to Sarah Palin and Willow in private. And then he'd take a 6 week voluntary unpaid leave of absence and donate a million dollars to the special olympics.

However, on the one hand it possibly was legitimate—he may not have known it was the 14 year-old Willow who was at the game, however, he is more likley simply upset with getting his facts wrong and assuming it was Bristol & that it is OK to take shots at an 18 year-old.
Frankly, as the mom of an 18-year old, I don’t appreciate the remark being directed at ANY of the Palin’s girls—regardless of the age, Letterman crossed the line IMHO.

There is nothing legitimate about this sorry excuse for an apology. The network and sponsors have been inundated with complaint calls, that is the only thing that made this piece of human garbage attempt to offer the feeblest excuse for a statement.
Apparently, his “apology” admits that he was making jokes about rape and prostitution, but it is “OK” because he meant it to be about an 18-year-old girl, NOT a 14-year-old girl.
I don’t even think it was funny if he did mean Bristol — which I do not think for a minute he did... his comedy writer was in a cSpan forum a few weeks ago and said one of the worst jokes Letterman told about Palin during the election was one he wrote and he was jumping up and down with excitement when David delivered it on the air exactly as he wrote it.
