Ticket for parking on grass in my own yard(PARKING TICKET)

Posted on 06/10/2009 6:29:47 PM PDT by Jessica2677

Does anyone know if this is legal? We just got a parking ticket for parking in the grass in our own yard. The ticket says "can not park on grass or unpaved area(even if your own yard). I swear to god this is what the ticket says and its a $50 ticket that doubles to $100 then doubles to $200 Does anyone know anything about this law????

That one makes perfect sense in Michigan in the winter. Picture trying to plow the snow with a lot of cars parked on the side of the street. I know a guy who lost his job as lot boy at a car dealership many years ago because the snow drift he plowed was 60% snow and 40% Cadillac. This law would put the responsibility on the car owner.

That sucks, but it is a common ordinance in a lot of places, almost always local. It's either usually for environmental or to fight blight, which is what I'd expect in Prince George's County considering it's a DC suburb. These are rather intrusive, but they are almost always constitutional in the eyes of the courts. I'd find the exact wording of the ordinance and look it up in your municipality issuing the citation, either County or City.

I recommend paying it early, since it probably doesn't go on your traffic or driving record (at least that's the case in my state), and if you wait it will cost more money. If you fight this, you'll pay court costs as well and/or attorney fees.

My guess is that some busybody called the cops on you. If you can find out who it was, look up a bunch of ordinances and then get some paybacks when they do something like this.

Are you on a golf course, do they mow under your 1953 Desoto, does the car run? Why don’t you just park the thing in the driveway..why not just drive it into the kitchen.....

I just had a code inspector for the city of Charlotte, NC, tell me that if I wanted to keep more cars and boats than my drive would hold, I would have to put paving stones under the tires of anything not in the driveway. The trash pickup guys turned me in for a reward.

In one town I lived in, it was illegal to park your car overnight on the street in front of your house

That's how it is in most cities in my state during the winter. Snow emergency law. That one actually makes sense because the roadplows are significant to public safety.

How long had your car been parked on the grass? Had the grass grown up around your car? Were the tires flat? Had your car begun to rust? Were parts of your car starting to fall off? Had varmints started living in your car?

I suspect these were the kind of things the law intended to prevent. If your car had been there only while you were unloading things from it, it was pretty stupid to ticket you.

Thats probably right, I should buy 1000 pink flamigos and see how much that person likes looking at those.
I understand the whole law of not having a broken down car in your yard and besides most of the people in this neighborhood dont have driveways...some of them have dirt.

Yeah, seen it in most cities. It’s to keep the place from looking junky, with cars parked all over the lawn.

Probably a law against motors hangin’ from trees too.

Years ago, I got a ticket for ‘driving on the unpaved portion of the road’ when I had a horrible car accident....LOL! You should fight it.

Our city ordinances in a very conservative city in a conservative county in Texas, do not allow parking on the grass, either. I was told that I could sprinkle a very sparse amount of gravel and it would suddenly become a parking area.

Your city or even your HOA can impose rules about parking.
