(AP) — AKRON, Ohio - Standing on brown earth on a flat field hundreds of yards from the nearest road, Don Carey is surrounded by tiny plants.

He walks along a three-quarter-acre plot in a desolate spot in this rural township in northeastern Portage County and looks at the thousands of tobacco plants he is growing.

Carey, 49, decided in April, when federal taxes on tobacco skyrocketed, to grow his own.

Doesn’t it have to be well drained soil also, or else Black Shank can get the roots?

Friend’s nephew raises a dozen acres or so each year and he had one field last year that didn’t drain very well and had to spend $700 for a gallon of some chemical to spray after the shank appeared.

Actually, this may be a great time to challenge Wickard v. Filburn and its cumulative effect rationale. The conservative block of the SC may be willing to overrule Wickard and start narrowing the Commerce Clause.

We could always dare to dream, but I seriously doubt that even the SC is going to stop the statist steamrolling of FedGov.

It is already legal to farm 1/10 acre of tobacco for personal use. You just can’t sell it.

Its the same with beer and wine. You can brew up to 200 gallons/yr for personal use.

hold on a second. are you telling me there is a law .. on the books... that says i cannot use my land, my seeds, my water, and my labor to grow something for personal use? (drugs not included)

exactly how could that square with the Constitution?

(drugs not included)

The FDA is now classifying Nicotine as a drug. Neat huh? All of the Drug Warriors will get theirs when the Sugar tax hits. Welcome to the party, pal. The Calorie tax is going to hit every criminal out there that likes to eat. So there.

i believe some of the founders grew their own tobacco, so it would be fairly tough to enforce such a law and have it stand up in court.

if it were upheld, that would mean the founders would be found guilty today.

i’m fairly certain the judges today would back off from that

(hmmm... maybe asking whether or not the founders would be found guilty under a law is a good way to defeat it)

We now purchase tobacco leaves. The leaves are not taxed so a carton of cigarettes still costs about $10.00. Five pounds of tobacco leaves and twelve cartons of tubes (shipping included) $100.00 If anyone is interested in the seller who also sells electric cigarette makers, just send me an e-mail.

Could you be more specific? My husband buys cans, and the price jumped from about $12 per can (6 oz.) to $30 per can after the tax increase.

I don’t smoke, but I see them for sale behind the counters of CVS and Walgreens. Tin cans of Drum, and another brand or two.

I noticed that this year in Connecticut I have seen more Acres planted with Tobacco [Broadleaf] then I have seen in ten or more years, also there is more Shade grown tents than I have seen in many years. Much of the shadegrown acreage has been fallow for years, prices must be up!

I refuse to buy Scotts-Miracle Gro products anyways since they ban their employees from smoking on or off the their property. I encourage all of you to join me in boycotting the poison they sell.

Here is a worthwhile link if you don't believe me:

It's called a Strawberry tree and it's made from cedar.
You can find the plans through an online search.
I made mine from scratch and it holds about
65 strawberry plants.

I have thirty tobacco plants growing and about fifty seedlings in limbo.
Those seedlings are so lonely.
