“History Class”

Does that still exist? I’m confused, what is this History you speak of?

More like complicit, convenient failure to educate against the mistakes of the past in an effort to secure power for the future.

Then he would do well to tell these people to follow America's example of individual liberty, hard work, and free-market capitalism.

Where does the Pope condemn any of these things in his encyclical above?

not condemn them to perpetual poverty through outdated, collectivist fallacies.

What is described in this encyclical is not collectivist communism so much as distributism. There is a big difference. Look it up.

From a read of history, I would have to agree with him at least in part. There were some very dark periods during this stretch of history.

I wonder why the media isn’t reporting this paragraph :)

“One possible approach to development aid would be to apply effectively what is known as fiscal subsidiarity, allowing citizens to decide how to allocate a portion of the taxes they pay to the State. Provided it does not degenerate into the promotion of special interests, this can help to stimulate forms of welfare solidarity from below, with obvious benefits in the area of solidarity for development as well.”

Also there is a great slam on environmentalists in section 48.

>>>> Really there is nothing new here. The Church has always been somewhat socialistic <<<<

I’m not even Catholic but I’ve known this to be true for a very long time.

Whenever the Church speaks to the issue of economics, it’s always a bit to the left of Karl Marx, and that’s been true as far back as I can remember.

I heard Mark Belling read excerpts of it on Rush today. I heard enough. It did indeed call for central secular authority over the world’s economic resources. Mark also pointed out a number of contradictions in the encyclical that many of us would notice instantly, such as a call for all western workers to unionize and a call to stop outsourcing jobs to “lowest bidder” third world countries, while also calling for new jobs in the third world. The unionization thing was to assure a high standard of living for western workers, while also calling for reducing energy consumption. Only if Pope Benedict can reproduce the miracle of fishes and loaves is this gonna happen.

Sooner the better.

End times coming.

To the world God's plan looks insane.

The Vatican must be getting tired of converting all that currency.

Money? No. But those who do not give Him His due are damned in any case.

“world political authority” to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies...”

So the Pope is on the same page as Obama, the 69.5 million fools who voted for Obama, Karl Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler. One world government directed by the dictatorship of the proletariat.

I love the Holy Father, but at first glance this seems like a serious blunder. Of course, a pope’s views on the economy are not official Church teaching.

H G Wells was a utopian socialist much of his life. I’m sure a one-world government was something he would like.

I agree. I, too, am shocked. Surely he sees (as he’s calling for UN reform, that alone a sad request they’re unlikely to abide) how global authority has failed. I keep hoping he was quoted out of context as has happened before.

"Where does the Pope condemn any of these things in his encyclical above?

I never claimed he condemned them, but by advocating a sytem that is effectively in direct opposition, I would think that just about anyone could make the logical extrapolation.

"What is described in this encyclical is not collectivist communism so much as distributism. There is a big difference. Look it up.

LOL. I imagine that 'big difference' exists only in whatever economic theory book you would refer me to...in practice there's little difference, it's called the 20th Century. Look it up.

You wrote:

“He said “render to Ceaser that which is Ceasar’s and to God that which is God’s”.”

Not about the poor He didn’t. I said poverty and injustice.

“Suggesting a one world government for the world’s economy would be very dangerous.”

That is not what Pope Benedict suggested.

“As it is now, with many different economies and governments, as one leader starts to falter another one takes the lead.”

True. And how well is that serving the poor by the way? How harshl do you think Jesus will judge this rich world for having so many poor and hungry people? I’m just asking.
