Sculpture of Michael Jackson at Iowa State Fair-FREEP this poll.
Iowa State Fair ^ | 07/09/2009 | staff

Posted on 07/09/2009 7:16:42 AM PDT by safetysign

We appreciate the input of hundreds of people who have voiced their opinions, both positive and negative, on the issue of including Michael Jackson in the 2009 butter sculpture.

The ongoing discussion has created a lot of, well, ‘churn.’ Since everyone has an opinion about the sculpture, we’ve decided to put it to a vote and let Fairgoers decide.

The concept of the sculpture will be a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk on July 20, 1969. In honor of Armstrong’s “giant leap for mankind,” this year’s sculpture will include an astronaut, an American flag and a buttery rendition of the surface of the moon. Depending on the vote, Michael Jackson would be featured in a small side portion of the sculpture as the first pop-star to perfect and popularize choreographed moonwalking.

Do you think Michael Jackson should be part of the 2009 butter sculpture?

Why are they discussing the butter sculpture in advance of the fair? I thought the butter sculpture was to be a closely guarded secret until the unveiling...

Oh, why certainly.

Michael Jackson’s silly dance step has equal historical significance with the magnificient triumph of the US Space program culminating on July 20, 1969 with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing at Tranquility Base.

I’m sure the high school history texts will say so. But nothing of course, trumps the incredible episode of Rosa Parks.

Nothing.

Jackson’s “moonwalk” has absolutely no relation to actual moon-walking. Why was it even called moonwalking? Why dilute the tribute to the astronauts and America’s accomplishment with some gratuitous homage to a pop star? Geez.

It’s not a secret. Besides, they have to work many hours on getting the sculpture of the little boy with his pants around his ankles just right.

Because being black (well, sort of) is now officially considered an actual skill. That's why Obama won the election.

Why did Michael Jackson's "moonwalk" overshadow James Brown's gliding foot shuffle of nearly 20 years earlier?

Go youtube the clip of him on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Michael wasn't an innovator. He was talented but he didn't create it.

It's a good idea, but only if everyone gets three tries for a quarter... throwing rotten tomatoes at it!

“The Michael Jackson sculpture should be prominently displayed in the Fair section that honors pedophiles.”

If he’s there, it will be.

given the incomplete media attention,

I understand the significance of a michael jackson butter statue.

But shouldn’t the “buttee” also be represented ?

I am going to have to make a phone call.... Follow me on this one... my husbands best friend’s wife is the one who does the butter sculpture. She took the job over 5 years ago from a woman who had been doing it for almost 40 years. I can’t imagine she will be doing Jackson!
