Farmers, activists at odds over animal treatment

By DAVID EGGERT | Associated Press Writer 11:20 AM CDT, July 11, 2009

LANSING, Mich. - Michigan farmers and animal rights advocates are fighting over the treatment of farm animals, a conflict that ultimately may be taken to voters.

The farm lobby is backing bipartisan legislation that would put into law the agriculture industry's guidelines for farm animals' health and welfare, and require audits of livestock farms. A 10-member council would review and possibly update animal care standards at least every five years and local governments would be pre-empted from setting their own rules.

Upset by what it calls the industry's "blatant power grab" in the debate, the Humane Society of the United States is threatening a 2010 ballot initiative to give farm animals in confined spaces more room. Voters passed similar proposals in Arizona, California and Florida. Governors and lawmakers also enacted measures in Colorado, Maine and Oregon.

Farmers will simply quit being farmers. Things on the farm are tough enough already with all the regulations and other government interference in the market place. Additional costs added by tree huggers and animal rights nut cases will just be the final nail in the coffins of the last remaining (and already rapidly dwindling) independent farmers.

The Czar of Amerika (Obama) will soon be announcing collective farming, like the pogrom Stalin used to starve over 10 million Ukrainians to death with. (which the NYT's received a Pulitzer prize for ignoring and hiding from western countries)

My guess is that an HSUS-styled initiative, rather than hurting the large well-financed “industrial” farms, is going to hit small farmers the hardest so HSUS ends up strengthening the very thing it professes to loathe.

Another example of the government being used for what it’s not meant for. A farmer has the right to run his/her farm however they please, with the free market as their guide and guard. Unfortunatly, a combination of @$$ kissing by our government and the bloated egos of some fanatics has led to situation like these.

One of these days I’m going to be laughing all the way to the bank when these fools are practically starving to death and what’s bad is I don’t think I’ll care.

I’ll be laughing as well, while I’m cleaning my deer, turkeys, fishes, and elk.

And poachers and black-market breeders and sellers will be doing a land office business. That practically invites the mob to get involved, and you know the HSUS doesn’t have the guts to screw around with the goodfellas.
