Where did all the water come from?

--snip--

Noah’s Flood was a one-off event and we did not see it happen. Even so, the sources of water recorded in the Bible are consistent with our understanding of the structure of the earth...

Has anyone ever discovered these magical mythical fountains that contain enough water to flood the entire planet to the mountaintops???

The Noah story is just an allegory and NEVER HAPPENED!

Water has mass and needs to exist in a physical form before it can fall as rain.

Empirical science has never failed to agree with God’s word. - Where is all your bluster coming from?

A reasonable theory is proposed in a book titled The Genesis Flood. Genesis talks about the water above the firmament. This would be a water vapor canopy in the atmosphere. Interestingly, such a canopy would be consistent with climates that are demonstrated in the geological time scale. All that would be needed is a particulate in the atmosphere around which the water vapor would condense.

The second source of water is from under the ground. These would have been released in a geological upheaval.

There is a lot that could be said. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to review the historical geological record in light of uniformitarianism versus catastrophism. The authors make a good case for the latter.

I agree completely with what you’ve described here. Seems consistent with both Scripture and the evidence.

Wake up!

The mountains that existed prior to the flood were only hills by today’s standards. The mountains that we see today were born during the flood. The water came from below, and the jets of water surging up from the ruptured crust of the Earth is also where the comets came from.

“Anybody else hear this?”

Yes, it’s true. Indubitably, the meteor also killed-off all of the dinosaurs, and many of them were feathered. This is why we see no pictures of them or mention of them in the Bible.
There are two drains in both the large oceans, each several miles across. The Atlantic ocean drain was completely clogged with dinosaur feathers, contributing to the catastrophic effect of 40 days and nights of rain.

Nope, the mountains are millions of years old and there’s no way that 40 days and nights of rain could envelop the entire surface of the world.

You do know that large storms actually take water from the surface of the planet to create the condensation in the sky, right? There’s a finite amount of water on this planet and it’s literally impossible for there to have been enough water to create a global flood of that magnitude. There was regional flooding and some primitive scholar extrapolated that it must have covered the whole world, then he made up a story about it.

To think the Noah flood was literal and actual is the epitome of insane. The Bible has some good stories and some valuable lessons to teach, but it’s not a history book.

Your uneducated, simplistic, school teacher type comments are laughable.

God’s word is unilable (to those that understand it, and as God said, foolishness to the rest).

Your arguments he been covered so many times that enui is an understatement.

Black Sea.

An even bigger flood would have been when the Strait of Gibralter opened up and flooded the Mediterranean basin. THAT would have been worth witnessing from the high ground.

Can you cite Bible passages to support:

1)The mountains that existed prior to the flood were only hills by today’s standards

2)The mountains that we see today were born during the flood.

and my fav

3) the jets of water surging up from the ruptured crust of the Earth is also where the comets came from.

From steve-b's outdoor faucet. That's why his bill was so high.

No, that was Professor Kaos, aka Butters.

I'll take a crack at it...

The diameter of the Earth is about 12,742,000 meters (a bit wider at the equator; the Earth is a slight oblate spheroid). That yields a volume of ~1.08321 x 1021 cubic meters (volume of a sphere is 4/3 * pi * r3).

Mount Everest is 8848 meters high. If the entire Earth was flooded, then we have at least that much water covering the Earth, meaning the diameter is now 12,759,696 meters. That yields a volume of ~1.08773 x 1021 cubic meters.

What is the difference? It's 4.51932 x 1018 cubic meters. This is the extra amount of water needed to submerge the Earth entirely. Given there are 264.2 gallons per cubic meter, that is about 1.194 x 1021 gallons of water needed.

Currently, there is about 3.26 x 1020 gallons of water on the Earth. Divide the number needed by the number currently on the Earth, and you end up with about 3.66.

Thus, if the Earth were completely flooded to cover Mt. Everest, then we would need 3.66 times the total water currently on the Earth. Meaning it's somewhere else than the Earth right now (you cannot account for it with Antarctica, the Arctic, Greenland, or all the ice sheets put together).

What about the atmosphere? Well, the average height of the troposphere is 17,000 meters. Doing the math (volume of atmosphere minus volume of the Earth) we see there is 8.694 x 1018 cubic meters of air.

The maximum density of water in air is 4%. So assume that 4% of the atmosphere is water, and we could wring out every drop of water from the atmosphere, we get 3.478 x 1017 cubic meters, or 9.188 x 1019 gallons.

Which is about 7.7% of what is needed to cover the entire Earth in water to a depth of Mt. Everest.

Conclusions:

1. all the water has shifted back inside the Earth (for which there is no geological support);
2. it was a completely supernatural event with God manifesting more water than had ever been, or has ever been, on the Earth - it came from somewhere else and disappeared similarly;
3. it was a localized event that wiped out hundreds of square miles, like happened on the plains around the Black Sea when the Bosporus broke open.

But there's the math. If you want to claim the water was - and still is - present, then the basic facts really don't support such a claim at all.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark. 14 They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. 15 Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. 16 The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.

17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. [b] , [c] 21 Every living thing that moved on the earth perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.

24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.
