China has demanded that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan retract his accusation that Beijing practised genocide against ethnic Uighurs.
Mr Erdogan made the comments after riots in the Muslim Uighur heartland of Xinjiang in which 184 people died.
Xinjiang's capital, Urumqi, is under heavy police and military control.
UK-based analysts say al-Qaeda-linked militants in Algeria have called for reprisals against Chinese workers in the wake of the violence.
China's rejection of Mr Erdogan's remarks came in an editorial headlined "Don't twist facts" in the English-language newspaper China Daily.
It said the fact that 137 of the 184 victims of the 5 July unrest were Han Chinese "speaks volumes for the nature of the event".
The newspaper urged Mr Erdogan to "take back his remarks... which constitute interference in China's internal affairs", describing his comments as "irresponsible and groundless".
Mr Erdogan made the controversial comments last Friday, telling NTV television: "The incidents in China are, simply put, a genocide. There's no point in interpreting this otherwise."
Turkey is secular but the population is predominantly Muslim and it shares linguistic and religious links with the Uighurs.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQM) had promised to target Chinese workers in Algeria and north-west Africa, Stirling Assynt said.
A foreign ministry spokesman, Qin Gang, said China would work with relevant countries "to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of overseas Chinese institutions and people".
He appealed for understanding within the Muslim world.

There is an ethnic kinship among Turks, Uzbeks, and Uighurs that stretches across the centuries and across the Eurasian continent. This includes the three groups intermarrying freely.
The Uighurs are part of a much larger scene than just the `autonomous region’ in western China. I wonder if Beijing is aware of this.
China is well aware of the links between the Uighurs and other Turks. Uzbekistan is the world's only doubly landlocked country and China allows the Uzbeks to ships goods in and out without any tariffs or restrictions. In return the Uzbeks deny the Uighurs sanctuary and generally cooperate with China in suppressing them.
Pretty soon we will have all the Free Trader Globalists coming on here and spinning on behalf of Communist China.
This Muslim situation could not have happened to a more deserving country.

I find it the height of irony that the Turks would demand someone else admit to committing genocide.
You have to admit that this Sino-Turkish political row is entertaining to watch. I mean having the Turks accuse anybody of “Genocide” after what they did to the Armenians in WW1 is just hypocritical to the max.

I was deployed to Uzbekistan and found the people to be likeable and mostly laid back about Islam. One lovely young Uzbek woman remarked to me, “We’re Muslims, but we’re not jerks about it!”
Of course, their president is an SOB (but for a while it seemed like Karimov was our SOB) though the IMU and Hizb-ut-Tahrir are far worse. But it looks like we might get to keep our base in Kyrgyzstan for a while, anyway.
Not exactly surprising, given that they're the Turkic equivalent of the Anglo-Saxon ABCA nations (American, Britain, Canada, Australia - and New Zealand). Their languages are mutually intelligible, much as a New Zealander wouldn't have too much trouble making himself understood in New York City.
