BOSTON – Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. has sent flowers and a note to the woman who unwittingly sparked a national debate on race by calling police to report what she thought might be a break-in at Gates' home.
Wendy Murphy, the lawyer for Lucia Whalen, called the flowers a "gesture of gratitude." She declined to say what was in the accompanying note.

Folks, That’s the mentality we have to deal with. And as they take higher and higher orifice, that’s what will keep us at bay.
We should all thank Mr. Gates for opening up the fact that the majority of our Police, FBI and CIA do not profile blacks. More scientific studies need to be done to prove it also and brought out in the open. He has done his people a great dis-service.

This is ridiculous. Even if the card was a “thank you” card, if Gates really meant it, he would have sent it in the first place, not after he was shown to be a total ass to the American public. Attempted damage control, that is all this is, LOL.
Norm...as this is (hopefully) going away...to the archives for Jeopardy questions to be formed from...can we all stop calling Gates a ‘scholar?’ Its bugged me in every news account...’scholar’ as opposed to the more run of the mill, and not so pandering ‘Professor.’ The ‘scholar’ usage, IMO, rigged the story in Gates favor (why he is tooo smart to have been in the wrong...the problem had to be that ‘stupidly’ acting white cop)....

Gates denies saying anything about his mother in much the way that Whalen denies Crowley’s report that she spoke to him personally at the scene and described the men as “black” and wearing “backpacks”.
So between Whalen, Gates and Crowley, someone is lying and there are two involved people denying his accounts of what happened.
Maybe it's dawned on Gates that not one of his neighbors will EVER see anything unusual enough to call the police.
If I was his neighbor and saw 6 black men loading up a moving van at midnight, I'd stay out of it. Probably wine drinking upper class puffed up professors having fun pranking him...
