The Long Island mom behind the wheel in a fiery wrong-way crash that killed her and seven others along a New York state highway was reportedly drunk and had high levels of marijuana in her system, authorities said Tuesday.

The findings were part of a toxicology report that was conducted on 36-year-old Diane Schuler in the wake of the deadly July 26 crash along the Taconic State Parkway in Briarcliff Manor, The Journal News of Westchester reported on its Web site.

The findings were shared with relatives of the crash victims, which included Schuler's 2-year-old daughter and three nieces.

Schuler was coming home to West Babylon from an upstate camping trip when she drove her Ford Windstar minivan against traffic for 1.7 miles along the northbound lane of the Taconic.

“a tragedy just got more tragic.”

So if the tests revealed no intoxication, it would be less tragic because...??

There are a million questions here.

Who was at the campsite with her? Why did she have her brother’s children in her car while the brother was back home on Long Island. Where is her husband?

Who let this woman get behind the wheel of an automobile.

Maybe she was still impaired from partaking previously, even the night before?

Could be...

At this point, all assumptions in that regard seem equally valid.

I imagine toxicology could determine how long she had THC in her blood...but that's just another assumption.

Thanks but I really prefer Meyer’s Dark Rum - in the name of diversity and trying not to be too predictable - I assume you like that Panama Gold...but which papers do you use?

The driver’s son survived the accident. He’s in the hospital with severe head trauma.

Weed is illegal. Smoking weed and then driving is illegal.
Alcohol is legal. Drinking and driving is illegal.
She had been both drinking and smoking before driving and killing herself and the others.

So I don’t see how the facts at all support the conclusion that the legal status of mj and alcohol have anything to do with the outcome here.

There’s no way she got on the parkway in the wrong direction by accident. The state police would not search for a vehicle unless there was a compelling reason to do so. She probably told her brother she was going to kill herself.

The tests for THC aren’t measured that way.

They test for trace in the blood.

However, trace from THC can remain in the system for around 30 days. Longer if they test hair.

I don't think the conclusion implied by that question can be drawn from my remark.

It gets even more bizarre . . .

Other reports released in the last day or so indicate that several motorists had previously called 911 to report a minivan (of the same make and color as the one involved in this accident) driving erratically all the way down Route NY-17 and I-87 earlier that day. Reports included a woman driving the minivan was weaving through traffic, passing vehicles on the shoulder, etc.

Based on the description of the route, it looks like this whole scene apparently unfolded over a distance of 60-80 miles on these highways.

She took her Brother’s kids camping. Her husband was in a seperate car and left after she did. Apparently the story kept changing that the husband was going fishing and allowed her drive home on a three hour trip with 5 kids.

Yes I agree, she told her brother she was going to kill herself and he called the police.

You do realize that she was also drunk on alcohol.

That doesn't matter to the prohibitionists.

Actually for me, my denatured friend, I’ve been clean and sober for going on 25 years.

It’s a self imposed abstinence, as I’ve seen to many people’s lives destroyed with alcohol.

Well, that and the way people smell when they drink is nauseating.

I must have misunderstood you somehow. So I’ll ask, why or how did this become more tragic?

See Post #51.

This story is going to get more bizarre as time goes on.

There are some reports that this incident has been labeled a homicide by the county prosecutor's office, which would be highly unusual since the alleged perpetrator is dead and there would be no criminal prosecution anyway.

I am wondering if there are one or more other adults in the picture who are being investigated for a possible role in this.

The tests for THC aren’t measured that way.

"Delta-9-THC peaks in the bloodstream very rapidly after ingestion, and then is fairly quickly absorbed into the fatty tissue of the body. Dr. Novak indicated that Delta-9-THC can fall below detectable levels as soon as two hours after the use of marihuana. "
