Eunice Kennedy Shriver Dies at 88

By KRISTINA PETERSON

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a member of the famed Kennedy clan who devoted much of her life to children's charities, including founding the Special Olympics, died at the age of 88.

Known for her devotion to the mentally disabled community and in particular her mentally disabled sister Rosemary, Ms. Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968.

For years before, she had invited mentally disabled children to a summer camp held in the backyard of her Maryland home.

From the first group of 35 children, the Special Olympics grew into an organization that now hosts 227 programs in more than 180 countries and includes more than three million participants.

Thanks for the info. Obviously Rose would never have let anything be done to Rosemary that was an unnecessary medical procedure. I wonder how she and Joe got along after that.

Now if Rosemary HAD been “promiscuous” - had sex outside of marriage - would Joe have arranged for birth control for her? Or an abortion, if she’d gotten pregnant? Both of those are mortal sins according to the RC Church.

A lobotomy, on the other hand, was not. So though Joe may have been an SOB, was he actually being a good Catholic and a moral man according to the Church’s guidance? Joe and Pacelli (Pius XII) were good friends. I wonder.

That is a great story about Rose!

For me, my mom said I had guardian angels looking out for me or I would have expired by age two. :)

The horse missed my rib cage by a hair. I walked away with more horse sense and a bruise which I hid from my family so as not to give them another funny sara story tell to their grandchildren. They have a whole book already.

That’s cool. Francis was a wonderful saint and I always enjoy discussing him!

Indeed there is. Well, the next time NBC has a miniseries on a Republican family and highlights an arcane medical procedure, I’ll be sure to become indignant.

I would say Eunice and Joe were probably the only Kennedys that lived and died with honor.

Rosemary MUST be included on that list. She was mildly mentally handicapped and her father had her lobotomized to avoid any chance of scandal. She was the reason that Eunice started the Special Olympics.

Her Estate will probably owe no tax since the avenues of escape are wide and smooth. Estate Tax is also known as the “Paris Hilton Relief Act”. The rich didn’t get rich by paying tax and this family knows all the tricks to avoid the imposition of Estate/Gift tax.

I think the Kennedys are big users of charitable remainder trusts IIRC

Rosemary has to be placed in a special Kennedy category. She had her personality and any potential savaged by her parents when she was a child. Adolph Hitler would have been proud. Her opportunity to do anything positive or, for that matter negative was cruelly taken from her.

She should be considered a criminal Kennedy casualty much like Mary Jo Kopechne or Marilyn Monroe.

Good point!

I’m not a fan of anyone from that family, for any reason.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Although other members of the Kennedy family abandoned their pro-life beliefs as their political stock rose, Eunice Kennedy Shriver never did. And for that, pro-life advocates are mourning the passing of the woman who founded Special Olympics. (Excerpt)

Plenty of people received lobotomies because highly- educated medical doctors said that it would be the best way to treat them.

Rosemary was one of the early victims of the lobotomy run of horror. There is no excuse for a family of supposed 130+ IQ's to tell a quack, go ahead amd take a knife to my recalcitrant daughters conscious brain. Do you know how they decided when to stop slashing? When she (the allegedly retarded and mentally ill viticm) could no longer recite the Lord's Prayer. Good intentions? They say the road to hell is paved with them.

I am no fan of the Kennedy clan, but I don’t care for any mean-spirited comments on this thread.

Most of the posts here have been kind and respectful. However it is expected that her brother is likely to join her soon, and that thread will be very different. Suggest you not read it.

Yes, “they” do. So was it the family, or just Joe?

A third is that she was sexually promiscuous and that Joe feared a scandal from her getting pregnant.

She should have been chaste and virtuous like her brothers.

I believe I see your point. I see a distinction between patriarch's culpability and a family's' responsibility. God is the only judge of persons, families and nations. However, if my father directed that kind of ruthless mayhem against my little sister I would consider him a unconvicted criminal and our familial relationship/reputation would be just as permanently damaged as her brain.

RIP Eunice.
