The number of Americans filing for initial unemployment insurance rose last week, the government said Thursday, surprising economists.

There were 576,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended Aug. 15, up from a revised 561,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said in a weekly report.

A consensus estimate of economists surveyed by Briefing.com expected only 550,000 new claims.

Are the economists who are “surprised” by this the same economists who said last week the recession was over?

“So we need another stimulus plan to jumpstart the economy? Or maybe the public option will fix this? How about raising taxes on small businesses to punish they for not hiring? “

This is fun, those idiots!

Consternation reigns in the newsroom.

How many times can they run with the headline "signs the economy may be improving' when these kinds of details keep leaking out?

Funny how when unemployment fell under Bush, it was always billed as a “Surprise Drop in Unemployment Numbers” or “New Job Growth Greater Than Experts Anticipated.”

But when Obama is President it is always the Job losses and rising unemployment that “surprise” the experts.

Obambi and the Dims are not surprised by this at all. It is all part of their plan to dimantle our society and destroy America from within.

It would be more fun if I wasn't one of those "small business" - and currently staring down bankruptcy....

Even so...I don't want "other people money" - except if they buy my product...

And in a world ruled by logic and reason, "experts" who are constantly being "surprised" in their professed area of expertise would have to seek other employment.

"Would you like to supersize that?"

jobless claims come in higher than expected...

and the market goes UP !

why has their been this disconnect between news and market movement since obama was elected? Could it be the government is using stimulus funds to prop up the market? Because every single time recently unexpected BAD news comes out the market goes UP.

RE :”It would be more fun if I wasn't one of those “small business” - and currently staring down bankruptcy....

I understand and the whole future of this country IS very depressing. You are in the crosshairs of these liberals who want us unemployed begging for crumbs. Unfortunately republicans are not much better, we can only hope that 'good will come from the bad', that democrats win and power grab will ultimately result in a revival of capitalism and economic freedom and rejection of Wasjhington power.

It is best to try to see a silver lining, if you can, I wish you the best of luck, I see small businesses as national hero's.

If market goes down, market is evil. If market goes up, it is evil competition against a dot gov/lawyer/communist bag of idiots.

No way these people can function.

Small Business owner here too, and I wish we could do something to help you. We are slowly sinking, but I guess swimming is better than floating... Prayers to you and yours.

Well heck, I missed out on the surprize again! No Cracker Jack surprize for me!

All I see on the horizon is more deflationary spiral followed by hyper-inflation and uemployment.

Supposedly, only 5-10% of the initial stimulus money has been spent. I wonder how much has already been stolen.
