Thank you for saving me the trouble of saying that. I couldn't have phrased it better.

You can always tell who responds to the titles, or who quits after skimming the first and last paragraphs.

Try reading it before you go advising the Pope.

The United Nations system will never be able to do any of that. It is not set up for anything other than what it is. A global scheme to empower dictators and enrich the third world kings.

Sometimes you sound less foolish if you actually read the article, rather than assume the news outlet prepared an accurate title.

I’ll preface my comments by first saying “U.S. out of U.N.”

IMO, this is part of the Pope's role in "saving souls." There's a couple of goals, clearly aligned with the Church's role in the world, highlighted in the article:

“to make a commitment to securing authentic integral human development inspired by the values of charity in truth.”

“Openness to life is at the center of true development. . . . The acceptance of life strengthens moral fiber and makes people capable of mutual help. . . . They can promote virtuous action within the perspective of production that is morally sound and marked by solidarity, respecting the fundamental right to life of every people and individual.”

The Pope is rightfully calling out the UN (and other existing international organizations) as failing miserably "to make themselves worthy of authority".

"The obvious implication is that the current UN has not made this commitment." Pope Benedict XVI is spot on in criticizing the UN. As the head of the Church, he also must advocate for "giving poorer nations an effective voice" and to "arrive at a political, juridical and economic order which can increase and give direction to international cooperation for the development of all peoples in solidarity." IMO, this is a call for a reformed UN, an extreme makeover, not some new world order.

Self control is the first step of self government. Maybe we should be pinging the Pope with the real problems of pedophiles.

People who cannot cook an egg but pretend they can run the world service industry.

One also senses the urgent need to find innovative ways of implementing the principle of the responsibility to protect and of giving poorer nations an effective voice in shared decision-making.

Innovative Way #1: The UN seizes the Vatican and liquidates all valuable artwork, artifacts, holy relics, precious metals, etc. and gives the proceeds to poorer nations. Now, wouldn't that make the Pope feel so charitable?

Don’t forget that old fly-in-the-ointment, The Desperately Wicked Heart Of Man, Benny. I think that might throw a monkey wrench into your New World Order.

>>> that the concept of the family of nations can acquire real teeth. <<<

FAMILY of nations? I seem to remember that in the body of _Caritas in Veritate_ we are told that a “family” of nations is not enough — we should have a global BROTHERHOOD of nations. What would a global family/brotherhood of nations entail?

Would such a “brotherhood” be akin to Virgil’s “imperium sine fine” (i.e., “empire without end”)?

>>> ...to bring about INTEGRAL and timely disarmament... <<<

>>> He ends his own passage on world authority by stating that “The INTEGRAL development of peoples and international cooperation require the establishment of a greater international ordering, marked by subsidiarity, for the management of globalization. They also require the construction of a social order that at last conforms to the moral order. . . .” Note the phrase “at last.” <<<

>>> According to Benedict, a world authority worthy of this authority would need “to make a commitment to securing authentic INTEGRAL human development inspired by the values of charity in truth.” <<<

Integral...integral...INTEGRAL!

Can someone please the significance of this term in the context of _Caritas in Veritate_. Does it have anything to do with the Catholic “integralist movement” (Pius X and all that)?

Could Benedict be in favor of world government, as many now believe? Taken in the context of papal writings since the dawn of the UN, as well as Benedict’s own opinions, recorded both before and after his election as pope, the passage gains another meaning. It is in reality a profound challenge to the UN, and the other international organizations, to make themselves worthy of authority, of the authority that they already possess, and worthy of the expansion of authority that appears to be necessary in light of the accelerated pace of globalization.

This nails it so well, but will be tough for the sound-byte mentality to grasp.

In fact, and unfortunately, we can look forward to radicals taking the Holy Father's words out of the context of holiness and wisdom and instead using them to justify that awful end of all secular governments that we know in our guts is only a matter of time...

NO, why are you believing the liberal spin on this?

Sadly, as this thread demonstrates, the ability to read does not go hand in hand with the ability to understand.

Is Benedict in Favor of World Government?

But it should not be assumed that Benedict is sanguine; after all, he begins his purported embrace of world government with a call for UN “reform,” not expansion.

*******************

It seems that the answer to the question is "No".

If not for sin, we would be living in a world order. In a sinless world, man would obey natural law and be a united brotherhood.

We will live in the kind of world the Pope is talking about after the final judgment; but it is still a goal we should all strive for daily. If everyone did the right thing by every person encountered, this would be heaven on earth.

Our choice to sin affects everything. Some believe that this is why Satan defied God: God chose to create us with free will and Satan saw us as a flawed creation. He couldn’t accept God’s will about us.

I read the article and only a few of the comments.

How quickly liberals can transform themselves. The left has said ‘morality’ cannot be legislated, yet along comes Bama, quotes Cain, and says that his fix for the health care economy is the moral thing to do.
