One of Sen. Ted Kennedy's favorite topics of humor was the incident at Chappaquiddick Island, Mass., in 1969 in which he drove off a bridge and left behind a 28-year-old woman who drowned, according to a biographer who reminisced about the iconic Democrat on a Washington, D.C., talk show this morning.
Edward Klein, speaking to WAMU guest host Katty Kay, said one of Kennedy's "favorite topics of humor was, indeed, Chappaquiddick."
"He would ask people, 'Have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?'" said Klein, a former Newsweek foreign editor and former editor in chief of the New York Times Magazine.
Klein's revelation on the "Diane Rehm Show" can be heard in a clip of the broadcast.
Kennedy died late Tuesday night at age 77 after battling brain cancer.
Klein, the author of a biography published this year, "Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died," immediately tried to put his remarks in context.
"I mean, that is just the most amazing thing," he said. "Not that he didn't feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too."

Ted Kennedy died for the benefit of the world. Unfortunately, he died seventy-seven years too late.
I am curious to know which Chappaquiddick jokes he thought were funny.
Why don’t they just cannonize the creep and be done with it.
The Editorial page of the Malden Observer, the paper I write my column for made this reference to Kennedy. “1969 a night of bad behavior left a young woman dead”. So this is what the Malden Observer thinks of Drunk Drivers who kill people. Bad behavior. Monday’s deadline is Five O’Clock. Wait till they get my response. Especially in light of the dead fiend’s humor.

Sorry, your blanket claim for “conservatives” seems a bit overblown. Might re-state that being your opinion for the swimmer. Some of us do not share any goodwill for teddy nor hold any hopes he found forgiveness, to the contrary.

The context is that there IS no *other side* to being responsible for the death of another human being, ridiculous or otherwise.
Shameful, disgraceful and stunning that anyone would think this was a good thing to relate upon one's passing.
