People over 60 who consume moderate amounts of alcohol have a reduced risk for Alzheimers disease and other dementias, according to a large review of studies.
The analysis, which appeared in the July issue of The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, reviewed 15 studies that together followed more than 28,000 subjects for at least two years. All the studies controlled for age, sex, smoking and other factors. The studies variously defined light to moderate drinking as 1 to 28 drinks per week.
Compared with abstainers, male drinkers reduced their risk for dementia by 45 percent, and women by 27 percent...

Nanny state/health nazis might have some interesting comments.
Well with the head start I have I should be good to go then...
4 drinks a day is a lot if you ask me....unless you're in college.
I thought coffee once or twice a day kept the cobwebs cleared out.
What about the other studies showing that if you have as little as one drink per day your penis will fall off?
Or work at The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry?
Can I have all 28 drinks the same day?
Yes but limit yourself to names of the days that end in “Y”.
Hey, the older you get, the more you can consume on those days...
Drinking will sure help me forget what I don’t want to remember....does that count? LOL!
1 drink per week is NOT moderate drinking.... Let me tell ya’
You’re right, that does not even count as drinking!
Don’t worry...wait a couple of years and the current analysis will change (again)... One of the good things about living long enough is that you will see that you’ve been right all along. I am expecting that second hand smoke will shown to be a benefit in the year 2012.... stupid research grants are probably the problem but who knows....
Eat bacon, lots of salt, drink moderately, and enjoy life - for it is all you have....
Those classified as heavy drinkers did not have an increased risk of Any dementia compared with nondrinkers, but this may reflect sampling bias. Our results suggest that alcohol drinkers in late life have reduced risk of dementia. It is unclear whether this reflects selection effects in cohort studies commencing in late life, a protective effect of alcohol consumption throughout adulthood, or a specific benefit of alcohol in late life.
Salty Dog and a BLT. Sounds like a good lunch.

Drinking helps the brain not mind the aging process as much.
Buffalo theory rides again! There’s also a study that shows smoking (especially cigars) has similiar effects. Since drinking and smoking go hand in hand....
Penis or brain? Penis or brain?
Sounds like we mat have a teaching moment here, Homer style.
