How the feds caught Najibullah Zazi, pieced together 9/11 terror plot
New York Daily News ^ | September 27, 2009 | KERRY BURKE, ALISON GENDAR & others

The scruffy young Afghan at the heart of a plot to bomb New York looked ripe for a makeover as he shopped for Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer, which promises "brilliant color results." Najibullah Zazi also filled his cart with bottles of nail polish remover and hair dye agents like Clairoxide Liquid Developer. Sometimes Zazi was joined on his shopping trips to the beauty supply stores in suburban Denver by other bearded men ...

Zazi...might have fooled the clerk, but it didn't fool the feds. They knew the hydrogen peroxide - and the other acetone-based goodies that Zazi bought - could be used to make deadly bombs. And they already had been watching Zazi for more than a year, after wiretaps caught him communicating with Osama Bin Laden's followers, sources said.

"He was a lucky hit," a law enforcement source told the Daily News. "He was in touch with really dangerous guys with real track records of pulling off attacks."...

Left unsaid by Holder was this fact: Zazi was a teenager in Queens on 9/11, sources said. Zazi drew the attention of the feds on Aug. 28, 2008, when he took off from Newark for Peshawar, Pakistan - a teeming terrorist nest on the Afghan border. When Zazi returned on Jan. 15, his arrival at Kennedy Airport did not go unnoticed by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, sources said....on Thursday, an indictment unsealed...painted Zazi as a mad bomber. Zazi tried to cook up a batch of explosives in a Colorado motel room..and sent text messages to contacts that were "more urgent in tone than the last - seeking to correct mixtures of ingredients to make explosives..."

Zazi also galloped through the Internet to find stores in Queens where he could buy other chemicals he needed, the records show....

I’ve seen reports like this before and I ain’t buying it this time either.... Anyone can walk into their local home supply store and buy a gallon of Acetone ....no refinement required...no dyes/conditioners etc. Same is true for hydrogen peroxide. Every Rx has 3% solution on the shelf. Again...diluted with water only. Why would anyone fool around with hair care crap when it’s so easy to get to those two ingredients without all the “contaminants”. There’s more to it than what’s said here.

Unfortunately, info like this continues to give clues to the Islamist enemy about what behaviors to avoid in order to better slip under the radar...

Some of it falls into the realm of "common sense", but luckily for us, experience shows that a lot of stupid jihadis are sorely lacking in that department (claiming that the Ryder rental truck used in the first WTC attack was stolen, and returning to the rental location, for example)...

We can get a lot of mileage out of stupid jihadi tricks, because terminal stupidity is almost a prerequisite for becoming a jihadi, but we can't rely on or expect that to be the case for all of the evil, psychotic, death-worshiping barbarians in the ranks of the jihadi leaders...

Actually, from the article itself, it looks like they BLEW IT.

“What happened next unfolded fast and triggered what some federal investigators say was the premature arrest of Zazi - and two others - before any other plotters could be identified.”

The others involved were tipped off before arrests could be made, apparently.

The big concern is where the hell is the bomb making cache.

Strange.

No mention that the policies of the Bush Administration were fundamental to identifying this perp - AND that the policies of the Zero Administration were fundamental in blowing the arrest ?

Because it is 3% and that is not good enough. You can buy 27% from any pool/hottub place in gallon bottles.

This kid was an idiot! You can buy acetone at Home Depot or Lowes in gallon containers also.

This is an intresting thread

Now I know where to buy bombmaking materials, and what % of the end product they are.

Anyone care to post the formula or a simple “How To” for making TATP(triacetone triperoxide)?

(Loose lips sink ships guys)

Do we have Beauty Salons sensitized for terror alerts? Next time, they’ll send their hijab-wearing women in to buy the hair products, which makes as much sense. The third time, they’ll send in their bearded women. That was a joke.

LOL!

Everything but how to make the stuff.

Don’t sweat it, I know I can find it on the web if I wanted to - I was trying to make a point.

THere are a lot of dumb teens that hang around and could get hurt.

Thanks for the reply.

Note to others, read the wiki, esp the part about folks being injured while messing about with this stuff....

I would advise against trying to create some, even if you do find directions. The stuff is extremely unstable even if put together properly, according to the accounts I have read.

Oh yes, playing with any kind of explosive is waaaay past stupid - my point was to warn folks not to post stuff that “the young’uns” might get into.....
