Marco Rubio vs. Charlie Crist. The Rocky Balboa fight of politics.
http://news.google.com ^ | September 27,2009 | Thomas McCall

The Rocky Balboa fight of politics is occurring right before our eyes here in the Sunshine State.

Charlie Crist, the ever-popular governor of Florida with approval ratings in the 60's is getting more than he ever bargained for in his race for the United States Senate from Marco Rubio, the former speaker of the house in the Florida state legislature.

The pundits predicted an early landslide. The Republican establishment in Florida offered Rubio an easier office to win.

Maybe Attorney General?

Rubio declined.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) even threw their hat behind Crist the week he announced.

So what.

So how is Rubio still around?

It's definitely not the money as Crist has all but dominated that game by taking part in establishment fundraisers in Atlanta and Washington, DC. Meanwhile, Rubio has been touring the state.

Of Florida that is. Not Georgia, and not DC.

Again, how is Rubio still around? Could it be the conservative message and not the message that Crist recently offered by being one of a very few Republicans to endorse President Obama's stimulus package, a stimulus package of which only 36% of Americans believe is actually working? Or the fact that Crist said that Florida's above average unemployment was "not that big of a deal"?

Not to mention the fact that voters may be considering Crist a lightweight as Rubio has challenged Crist to ten debates. Ten debates that Crist has declined because he is supposedly too "focused on governing" and is saving sea turtles instead.

Hey UCFRoadWarrior,

You can't know who to give your vote unless you find out the truth.

Here's a quote from Rubio's website:

IMMIGRATION: “Legal immigration has been a great source of strength and prosperity for America, but I believe illegal immigration threatens the foundation of this system. If I had been in the Senate at the time, I would have opposed the McCain-Kennedy bill. I believe we must fix our immigration system by first securing the border, fixing the visa and entry process and opposing amnesty in any reform.”

Here's his website you can go there yourself and see what he really has to say.

I live in Florida and I like what I hear from Rubio. Especially after the cheap trick Crist pulled when Martinez resigned.

All I can say is “Amen”! The RPOF has the stones to tell us to send money for a
guy that is nothing more than an opportunist. This guy is nothing more than a spoiler. Sick of his face, reminds me of the turtles he tries to save.

I don't think I've ever encountered a person who affected me the way my first encounter with Charlie Crist did. I am a full time, freelance photographer and had a gig to shoot the opening of his headquarters here in Tampa at the start of his campaign for governor. Seemed nice enough, and seemed to say the right things for being on the campaign trail, but there was just something about him that didn't click with me. I still don't know what it was, but I think my gut reaction to him back then was pretty much right-on.

He has passed up a lot of chances to be a real Republican and at every one he just didn't seem to get it. I know there are those voters who don't mind wishy-washy politicans who seem to test the waters and then go with the most favorable position to the most people. I want someone who stands for something and is willing to put his career on the line to back up that stand. Charlie Crist is not that man.

Personally, I don't care if he's gay or not. That has been a frequent rumor and a lot of his supporters say that's why some people don't like him. Not so for me. I don't like his stands. His gayness or lack thereof is of no consequence to me at all. I am pretty much a live and let live sort of guy. Just don't expect me to condone your lifestyle and then get mad at me when I don't!

Cannot support Rubio...he is pro-illegal alien.

More ignorant things have been said, but this comes very close.

Hey! That’s the best idea I’ve heard yet. Crist should get John McCain to stump for him in Florida.

I am in agreement with you.

Crist is popular.

Bible Belt voters in the Ft. Myers area and hispanics in Dade will vote for Rubio. Maybe a couple counties in the Panhandle. But he won’t beat Crist. Too much of a Mel Martinez clone is right.

I think in that pic that Obama wants to ‘do’ Crist. Both are semi in the closet tea baggers.

Oh he has accomplished quite a bit and none of it good.

Increased the cigarette tax by a dollar a pack(and then the feds did the same thing about six weeks later) and then upped the fees to renew driver license by over 100% and license plate registration and Vehicle title registrations almost 60% increase.

Also the state then discriminated against most of its citizens by denying them to purchase a year in advance on the license plate renewal unless your vehicles were due to expire within 90 days of the law taking effect.

You are so right, he hasn't done anything good for this state.

You’d rather have Crist than Rubio? The only way a self-avowed conservative would rather have Crist than Rubio is if they are a phony or a bigot.

Maybe we outta start thinking of ways to help Rubio out.

I was thinking, if we made up flyers and started putting them up in our neighborhoods about a month before the election. Something like this.

I’m not telling you who to vote for but PLEEZE don’t vote
for the ONE who promised not to raise taxes and has now
raised the cost of drivers license, car tags, college tuitions, cigarettes, and collecting HUGE ammounts on
the seat belt law. Seat belts save lives but they are not interested in saving your life..it’s the millions in revenue
they want. Please vote against this person Charlie Crist!!

I’d be willing to go through my neighborhood and local flea
market and pass out flyers if it’ll help send Charlie
packing.

I agree. We need to be community organizers in Fl, for Rubio. If we start now, we can do it. I’m going to have some signs made, flyers too. I’m game for whatever it takes.

Aside from his “fence balancing” act on comprehensive immigration reform, he’s got my vote!!!

AND I’ve got my bumper sticker!:-)
