WASHINGTON: An ardent admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday joined Indians in praising the apostle of peace on his 140th birth anniversary.
In a special message on Gandhi Jayanthi, Mr. Obama said: We must renew our commitment to live up to his ideals and to celebrate the dignity of all human beings.
Gandhis teachings and ideals, shared with Martin Luther King Jr. on his 1959 pilgrimage to India, transformed American society through our civil rights movement, Mr. Obama said.
Noting that Americans owed a lot to Gandhi, Mr. Obama said the America of today has its roots in the India of Mahatma Gandhi and the non-violent social action movement for Indian independence which he led.
The President said on behalf of the American people, he wanted to express his appreciation for the life and lessons of Mahatma Gandhi on the anniversary of his birth.
This is an important moment to reflect on his message of non-violence, which continues to inspire people and political movements across the globe, he said.
We join the people of India in celebrating this great soul who lived a life dedicated to the cause of advancing justice, showing tolerance to all, and creating change through non-violent resistance, Mr. Obama said.
The United Nations General Assembly had in 2007 decided to observe October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence. PTI

Mahatma Gandhi
The US owes a lot to China.
(snicker)
A lot of what?
No offense to Mr. Gandhi intended but he should have been pretty thankful for the benevolence of the Brittish. I mean if hunger strikes were quite enough to finish off empires then the Germans would have lost WW2 for a rather different reason than the one history records.

Obama is a failure. Too bad all those voters don’t see it.
Worked with many very educated Indians throughout my life. Most of them hated Ghandi’s guts.
Huh?!?!?!
Obambi, tell that to the street thugs in Chicago. You know about non violence, etc. etc.
You fool.
Just a guess.
Gandi would have got the Olympic games. *pouts*
Uh no....
The same Gandhi who vowed to support the Nazis against the British?
“Worked with many very educated Indians throughout my life. Most of them hated Ghandis guts.”
What was their reasoning for that?
Funny You should say that. I work in the pharma industry with many highly educated Indians. They agree 100%. Ghandi wanted India to end up like a third world African country, with no ability to move forward.
See post # 17.
Oh you mean the Gandhi who told 250,000 Jews of Germany to commit suicide in protest of Hitlers treatment of them? The Gandhi who let his wife die instead of letting British physicians give her a penicillin shot (rare med in those days) because it would do violence to her body (getting the injection, the act of) ... you mean >that< Gandhi Barry?????
Oh and one more thing ... Gandhi was a great admirer of Hitler too ... guess that shows with Barry ....
