WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As one of the most influential Democrats in the House of Representatives, Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York, has seen the highs and lows that come with the job.

Lately, it's been a steady drum beat of criticism by Republicans against the chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, the lead body for writing tax law in the House. Rangel has been under investigation for over a year on several ethics issues, including failure to report assets and pay taxes.

The issue has the potential to become a "political liability" for Democrats, a veteran political analyst said.

"These charges are serious. And they keep adding more charges," said Stephen Hess of the non-partisan Brookings Institute. "So they're going to have to be met and dealt with and voted upon. They can't be swept under the table."

Some of the issues facing Rangel:

If the GOP were capable of running a competent, coordinated campaign strategy, then, yes, this would be a problem.

However, the news media will ignore this story when it really counts, unless a Republican actually DOES raise this issue in a campaign ad. Then, the news media will call him or her a "racist" and the cocktail crowd of Beltway Republican will tut-tut while the trust-fund faux-conservatives who staff the political campaigns and consultant shops in DC will drop Rangel like a hot potato.

14 months from now, Charlie Rangel will still be in Congress, Nancy Pelosi will still be Speaker of the House, and Beltway Republicans will be lecturing to us while apologizing for their political brethren who actually try to stand up for issues that matter.

The 2010 elections will be seen as yet another "wake-up" call for the GOP to jettison those pesky "conservative christians" and become as liberal as the DemocRATS, even though they already are, which is the actual problem.

The’d better be careful and not complain too strongly or Rangel might actually quit or be forced out. Then they can’t use him as a poster boy for Demo malfeasance next year at this time.

Of course then the intelligentsia will say don’t hold the whole party responsible for the actions of one bad apple. Unlike 3 years ago when the whole GOP was practically accused of child abuse because of Foley.

“Analysts: Rangel’s woes could be liability for Dems in 2010 (No Nobel prize for tax-cheat Charlie)” Wishful thinking, there is not a chance of this. If Charlie is forced to resign his seat will go to David Paterson the Governor of NY they are trying to squeeze out of office.
