PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The rise of conservative "tea party" activists around the country has created a dilemma for Republicans. They are breathing life into the party's quest to regain power. But they're also waging war on some candidates hand-picked by GOP leaders as the most likely to win.

In upstate New York, Dede Scozzafava, 49 years old, is the choice of local party leaders to defend a Republican seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, an abortion-rights candidate who could appeal to independents. Doug Hoffman, 59, is a local accountant backed by tea-party activists who has jumped into the race declaring himself the real conservative.

Yes indeed. Good thing. Trying to save the country and the Constitution can certainly annoy Republicans like John Cornyn. Keep it up.

This is rich! Those idiots in power in the GOP just don’t get it. It’s a NEW DAY and WE THE PEOPLE will NOT follow the powers that be in WDC.....we will LEAD the powers that be in WDC. If you don’t prove yourself to be a true constitutionalist, a conservative in every sense of the word, don’t bother to run.

Imagine the power the GOP could gain if they stopped trying to hand pick our candidates for us.

Think we are in grave danger is we throw the 'baby' out with the bathwater. We do have some Repubs working hard on our behalf! They should be thanked; not threatened per 'blanket criticism'.

The option of third Party/Independent candidates can only divide our Repub vote and insure an Obama win. Now is the time to not only get behind the right candidates; but the right Party; IMHO.

If your candidates/Representatives are not 'Right'; then find a decent Repub who is and support them. If they are right most of the time; and committed to honoring Founding Father principles per our Constitution; get behind them.

Vote on a conservatives record. Never their promises. If this Doug has no record one can only look at who an what he has supported in the past.

Voters have an obligation to the safety an security of this nation to ensure their vote is not made without careful research / study of the issue or the polidiot.

Good luck NY !

Don’t squander such a awesome resource folks.

My opinion.

If we want to get conservatives elected we are going to have to step up and start knocking on doors Republican and Democrat you have to canvas your neighborhood and get to know people. We have to know you fact and back it up. Maybe some Better Dead than Red signs also There are SOOOOOOO many people out there that do not have a clue as to what is going on There need to be a sheet with maybe 10 key points as to why Democrats are dangerous and RINO also. When people who do care find out what is going on they get scare

Scozzafava — proven RINO. That is the record. A real rat or a real conservative would send the correct message to the GOP leadership. A whole new group of 535 would suit me — can it be any worse than what we have now?

That’s an understatement. Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

Kos and Acorn are supporting the Republican endorsed candidate in that race. That says how bad of a choice the Republicans made here.

Ms. Scozzafava spent 20 years as a stockbroker. Her family has owned the same auto-parts store in Gouverneur, N.Y., for decades.

Well, she did work as a stockbroker for 20 years, so maybe she favors low capital gains taxes and thinks that makes her a Republican. But all those issues you listed would make anyone wonder why she thinks she's a Republican, let alone why any real Republicans would consider her one. Those eleven county chairmen made a dumb choice here.

Some of these "moderates" just can't learn that you can't win by insulting and pissing off your base. Every candidate won't please conservatives on every issue, but this woman is ridiculous.

We need to stop worrying about so-called independents. They usually end up voting dem. If they are disgusted enough with O and his tactics, they will vote for the Republican.
