EDITORIAL: Robert F. McDonnell for governor (Endorsement)
The Manassas News/Messenger ^ | 10/18/2009 | Editors

Posted on 10/18/2009 6:26:44 AM PDT by CharlesWayneCT

Republican gubernatorial candidate Robert F. McDonnell has a detailed plan for tackling transportation issues that includes everything from tolls to privatizing ABC stores in order to gain revenue specifically for transportation.

While everything in his transportation plan may not work, we are impressed at the effort he put forth in coming up with solutions, something his opponent seemed wary of doing.

...

Of course, being a Republican, he is also eager to trim waste from the state’s budget and maintain low taxes, both things we appreciate. We are afraid that taxes would be a simple answer to many problems from his opponent, R. Creigh Deeds..

...

This is one reason we cannot support Deeds. We understand that the thesis reveals certain ideas that McDonnell may have once held, but it is not something to base a campaign around. We wanted to hear more about why Deeds should be governor and less about why his opponent should not be.

...

McDonnell is the man with the plan and a way to articulate it. We expect good things, and we look forward to seeing him in action as our governor.

We ask you to vote for Robert F. McDonnell for governor on Nov. 3.

GOod endorsement with sound reasoning. I did chuckle at the line where they suggest that being a republican automatically meant an aversion to tax increases -- I wish that were true, and with McDonnell it is, but not with some of our republicans these days.

This paper (our local paper) takes these things seriously. They had both candidates in for extensive interviews, which they broadcast in an online web cast; they had readers provide questions as well.

The paper is not "conservative", and often is the source of derision amongst the local conservatives, especially when it comes to illegal immigration issues, but they do appear pragmatic and have endorsed their share of republicans.

I personally think newspapers should stop endorsing candidates, but so long as they do, I'm glad when GOOD papers endorse my candidates, and glad when bad papers like the Washington Post endorse the opponents.

Yes, and I believe quite a lot of Republican voters readily vote themselves higher taxes at the local level when propositions are put on the ballot.

Yesterday, Bob McDonnell made a joint campaign appearance with John McCain. He has rebuffed Sarah Palin throughout. I’m still likely to vote for him, more because Deeds is a moron. But, I’m no longer enthusiastic about him and will be more watchful for RINO poop in his wake.

Well, John McCain was our Presidential nominee, and is a Military Veteran.

So it makes sense he would appear at a Veterans For McDonnell event.

McDonnell was Fred Thompson’s state representative. Thompson lives in Virginia, and has done several events and fundraisers with McDonnell.

Fred Thompson has endorsed Hoffman in the NY-23rd race; I don’t think anybody here is questioning Fred Thompson’s conservative credentials.

Just a few people, most notably NOT Sarah Palin herself, have tried to stir up some level of resentment where there should be none — hopefully the actions of these well-meaning but ill-mannered folks will not reflect poorly on their candidate of choice.

Strategically, when you have a lead and are well-respected, your campaign will not want to do anything to energize the opposition. I think we can all agree that John McCain is not going to stir up liberal democrats to come out and vote.

That’s true, it won’t energize the opposition, but it might cause a number of conservative libertarians to rethink support if he is in anyway going to be indebted to McCain or seek his counsel.

As far as being ahead - that’s a great reason not to bring McCain into the final 2 weeks.... I’m a veteran and a fellow naval aviator - I respect McCain’s service. I can’t stand his politics and I think that he is disingenuous and dangerous .

Another endorsement from the Sun Gazette

Editorial: Our Pick for Governor

*break*

McDonnell is not without flaws. Some of his policy positions give us pause, and some others appear like gimmickry. But put the two candidates next to one another, and there is one candidate who has given thought about how he plans to lead the Old Dominion out of current economic conditions. Robert McDonnell.

McDonnell has the solid backing of the business community, which fears Deeds could become a tool of unions and environmentalist fringe groups, wrecking the bipartisan effort that has maintained the Old Dominion as one of the most business-friendly states of the 50. McDonnell has a plan for transportation upgrades; Deeds urges us merely to trust him to come up with a solution.

For those, perhaps a majority of Northern Virginians, who plan to vote for Deeds, we ask the question: What, besides the (D) next to his name, has he done this campaign season to engender enthusiasm or support? How will someone who has overseen such a debacle of a campaign manage to run the state government?

If voters can find suitable answers to those questions, Deeds is a reasonable choice. But, absent such answers, there is only one candidate who meets Virginia’s standards, and that is Robert McDonnell.

I’m waiting to see how many, if any, virginia papers actually endorse Deeds. So far the only paper I know about is the out-of-state Washington Post.

I think many of the local papers were bought up a few years ago by Gannett and Media General so they will run the same pro-Deeds editorial if they haven’t already. Maybe they’ll surprise me this time around.

First of all may I welcome you to Free Republic. Second of all, for you to try and label a good conservative like Bob as a RINO is the biggest joke I’ve ever heard. Pathetic. Go Bob Go!!!

This reads like an endorsement in the Winchester Star:

Bob McDonnell: Consistent conservative can send national message

Thanks for posting this. I am a subscriber to this newspaper, but I don’t read the editorial section. I did for the first month we after we started the subscription, and I nearly canceled. The only reason I don’t, is that I like knowing about the goings on (and this paper rocks for that) and my little girl likes to paint...and I like my floors and furniture to not be painted...so...the newspaper serves that purpose as well.
Thanks again for posting, “neighbor”. :)

Sen. McCain at a Vets affair is one thing, and perfectly sensible.

Having Gov. Palin at a generic rally this late in the day would be no more than a circus where she would garner all the attention over the candidate himself, simultaneously engendering a ton of unnecessary negative publicity and increasing Dem turnout. Love her, but if I were McDonnell, at this stage of the campaign, I wouldn’t want her in VA, either.

Palin’s grandson was born into sin. Appearing with Palin will compromise McDonnell’s ability to provide Christian Leadership in Richmond.

Every one of us is born into sin, and your argument is ludicrous.
