pulled off one of the funniest deals in t.v. history.
On his show one saturday morning he told all his very young listeners to go to their mommies purses and daddy’s wallets and send the green pieces of paper to him.
He got over a hundred thousand in the next week or so and got suspended from t.v. for a while.

Didnt he ask kids to grab money out of their parents wallets and send it to him (as a joke) on TV? Yes he did. I saw that show. It was obvious that he was joking, but some kids did just what he asked. I hope God has a nice whipped cream pie ready for his arrival.

A legend in Detroit for many years. I started watching him in 1955 and he had a show called “Lunch with Soupy” everyday. Kids all knew what we would be eating for lunch the next day because Soupy would post it the day before and many a parent had to scramble to make sure we were all eating what Soupy was. He will me missed by many of us.

You are mistaken.
The green pieces of paper bit was absolutely done by him. The date was January 1, 1965.
Here is a video of him describing the event in his own words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-OGy3Kh7yM. At the link there are also some cutouts of a newspaper article describing his suspension.

I had Lunch with Soupy all the time during the’50s!
He once made a dedication to a new mall in the ‘burbs of Detroit and I went to see him. About the only thing I can remember was that he was really tall, a lot taller than I thought esp. with him wearing that stovepipe hat.
Another joke attributed to him, accurately or not, was “My girlfriend may not be a good cook, but she can sure make my banana cream...pie”
RIP Soupy!
