DETROIT Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83.
Sales died at Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said.
At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said.

pulled off one of the funniest deals in t.v. history.
On his show one saturday morning he told all his very young listeners to go to their mommies purses and daddy’s wallets and send the green pieces of paper to him.
He got over a hundred thousand in the next week or so and got suspended from t.v. for a while.
Oh man...this is hard to take. Soupy was a huge part of my growing up life.
Yes he did. I saw that show. It was obvious that he was joking, but some kids did just what he asked. I hope God has a nice whipped cream pie ready for his arrival.
RIP
A legend in Detroit for many years. I started watching him in 1955 and he had a show called “Lunch with Soupy” everyday. Kids all knew what we would be eating for lunch the next day because Soupy would post it the day before and many a parent had to scramble to make sure we were all eating what Soupy was. He will me missed by many of us.

Bad news selfping.
RIP Soup.
I have many fond memories of Soupy.
I loved Soupy, this is sad news. RIP Mr. Sales.
I loved Soupy giving the spelling lesson to White Fang.
I thought I was the only one that remembered “Do The Mouse”! I adored Soupy, got the boxed set of his shows on DVD last year. RIP.
The green pieces of paper bit was absolutely done by him. The date was January 1, 1965.
Here is a video of him describing the event in his own words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-OGy3Kh7yM. At the link there are also some cutouts of a newspaper article describing his suspension.
I had Lunch with Soupy all the time during the’50s!
He once made a dedication to a new mall in the ‘burbs of Detroit and I went to see him. About the only thing I can remember was that he was really tall, a lot taller than I thought esp. with him wearing that stovepipe hat.
Another joke attributed to him, accurately or not, was “My girlfriend may not be a good cook, but she can sure make my banana cream...pie”
RIP Soupy!
