Gore Gone Wild: Predicts 220 Foot Sea Level Rise in 10 years

The scariest story told this Halloween week had nothing to do with ghosts, goblins, or zombies, though it was certainly dripping with huge gobs of Gore. In fact -- the most terrifying words screeched in the past seven days came from the master of environmental horror himself.

According to Arab Internet services company Maktoob.com, our favorite greenhouse gasbag spent Tuesday afternoon outlining the reasons why attendees of the Leaders in Dubai Business Forum must change their wicked gas-guzzling ways:

“The North Pole ice cap is 40 percent gone already and could be completely and totally gone in the winter months in the next 5 to 10 years.”

Such thaw, cautioned Gore, “could increase sea levels by 67 metres” and that “each one metre of sea level rise (SLR) is associated with 100 million climate refugees in the world.” That’s up a full 47 meters from the already horrifying predictions he’s made previously.

Incidentally, a climate refugee (or “environmentally induced migrant” as the UN would prefer we refer to them) is a person forced to move to a new country by global warming related environmental disasters. Where the whacky climate refugees per meter SLR figure came from is anybody’s guess.

Anyway, if my math is correct, the 2007 Nobel laureate effectively predicted that by 2020, the oceans could rise 220 feet and 6,700,000,000 people will be forced to wander the planet in search of a less soggy domicile.

And the journey won’t be easy, what with much of the planet underwater and its entire population -- which Gore’s 6.7 billion amounts to -- vying for whatever dry land remains available.

But before we pack our tents, inflatable rafts, and foreign-language dictionaries, let’s take a closer look at the green Stephen King’s figures.

Archimedes presents an oversimplification, which is why it's important to consult earth scientists, not physicists.

Archimedes’ findings involved buoyancy and submerged/partially submerged objects or materials in isostatic equilibrium...which is irrelevant to the ice cap on Greenland, for example, on this timescale (the earth's crust is still rebounding from the last glacial retreat—definitely a slower timescale). Greenland's melting would add water to raise sea level, for example, and it would take dozens of millennia to make the physics argument relevant—not because the physics is wrong, but because they omit the viscosity factor and make an unwarranted assumption of a static earth backdrop.

In general, geologists are far more skeptical than physicists.

Ummmm ... I thought the North Pole ice cap was on water?

Mr.Gore ... have you forgotten about Archimedes and the bath tub?

When you start rising about rising seas (and your own ability to lower them) you start seriously treading into self-deification territory. Consciously, or sub-consciously, these idiots are trying to invoke the trope of the Flood, with perhaps a side-helping of Moses at the Red Sea. And to gain attention the stories have to become more and more grandiose. I agree with all who’ve said that he should be in a home for the criminally insane.

Also it would take a lot of energy to melt all the ice in Greenland.

Not to mention creating millions of new acres of farmland.

And if a waiter comes over and pours water into your glass, like water melting off Greenland, it magicallt can't overflow. Obviously, only an idiot doesn't believe in such magic!

And obviously normal people drink saltwater with freshwater ice cubes, else the analogy would be false and not be applicable to the actual world's conditions. Only a worse-than-idiotr would think so, right?

Sorry, but incorrect claims by both sides are not helping.

Awesome! Washington DC flooded and the politicians going hat-in-hand to previously dismissed “fly-over country” looking a new home. HA-ha!

And you can get back to me when your science improves.

Cheers!

If you choose to believe in Al Gore and The Tooth Fairy then there is nothing much I can say to you. Man made "Global warming" is a hoax concocted by hucksters looking to tap into our wallets and control our lives.

Where did I ever say I believe Algore?

I am not a doctor...you should go see one for your overactive patellar reflex...that kneejerk is making you jump to conclusions.

BTW, climate change and global warming were discussed long before Algore. I suppose you believe he invented the Internet, too. Perhaps you meant that the hucksters latched on to the science.

"BTW, climate change and global warming were discussed long before Algore."

Let me see. In the seventies we were all going to freeze to death. I'm old enough to remember that one. The solution always comes from some government slug who's motives I always question. Do you think that the improvements made by man are going to melt the ice in Greenland? If you do then you sir are an idiot. Or at least niave.
