Same reason why people own tigers, and bears, because they think they can tame them, and treat them like cute fuzzy animals that are part of the family, until the animal terrorises the family or kills them...
Wild animals, are WILD ANIMALS, there is nothing cute and fuzzy about them, it's the natural of the beast.

Many years ago I met a good looking chick who worked for a travel agency that handled the flight bookings for our plant executives and she would deliver the tickets to me in the HR dept.
I asked her out for lunch one day and during the course of conversation, she revealed she had a monkey for a pet.
That was the end of that courtship! I hate monkeys, monkeys are creepy and anyone who owns a monkey has to be equally creepy too.........I even cheered for the planes in the movie King Kong.
