Going Rogue:An American Life -- 300,000 Copies Sold on the First Day!

Hey, remember that story last week about how she’d have to sell a whopping 400,000 copies for HarperCollins to break even?

I think it’ll be okay.

There’s a rule of thumb in the industry that publishers net about $10 per hardcover sold, after expenses, but before the cost of the advance. Once she’s sold 700,000 copies, then, HarperCollins is in the black. And what of that 1.6 million printed? An ideal “sell-through” rate is about 75 percent, which means HarperCollins thinks it’s going to sell about 1.2 million copies. At that level, Palin will have made $7 million and HarperCollins $5 million of its own.

A HarperCollins insider told The Daily Beast that the book sold a staggering 300,000 copies on the first day alone, which was Tuesday. “Sales are phenomenal, and we are convinced that the book will continue to sell phenomenally for some time to come,” says the insider. They’re not prevaricating: As of 2:30pm today, the book was #1 on Amazon, ahead of both Stephen King’s new novel, Under the Dome, and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol.

The latter sold 1 million copies on its first day, but that figure included the UK, and top fiction generally trumps non-fiction. Any way you carve it, Going Rogue looks to be a $12 million goldmine.

Hmmm...don't forget the pre-release sales too.

And those picking up a copy to have signed on the tour.

Cheers!

>> At that level, Palin will have made $7 million

After what Sarah Palin has been through, I wouldn’t blame her if she took the cash, went back to Alaska, and lived the good life with Todd & family.

But I doubt she’ll do that. Whatever she does, I’m behind her.

Suddenly, her decision to declare asynchronous warfare on the nasty garbage in Alaska that were persecuting her, quit the Governors mansion, and go raise a boatload of dough doesn’t seem like such a dumb idea anymore... does it.

If she DOES decide to continue on in politics — and I think she will — that’s quite a war chest to start out with. And there’s more where that came from.

Not sure that rule is very good if they are selling them for $10

I wonder if the 300K included the pre-sales number. As for picking up copies, unfortunately there are several postings that said some stores that hosts Palin didn’t have enough copies for everybody... Hopefully the situation gets better after the first day experience of book signings...

How can they make that much when it sells for under $10 in lots of places?

That’s because Amazon and Walmart are at a price war. They are cutting their own profits per book.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense. There were already some short stories today about second printing. If the first printing was 1.5 million... And Amazon alone pre-sold 80,000.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=going+rogue+second+printing&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS345US345&ie=UTF-8

There seems to be some confusion, but the 300,000 seems very low if the initial printing was 1,500,000 and a second printing has already been ordered. Some times the industry counts for book and CD sales can be confusing and can lag.

More details have to be released. These figures are based on an article appearing on the Daily Beast, a loony leftist site, so you have to take it with a grain of salt. It is in their interest to downplay the real numbers.

If there were 300,000 recorded by Nielsen’s Bookscan, you have to add about 25 percent more to account for books sold by WalMart, Target, Sam’s Club, Costco, and some independent stores which are not part of the Bookscan system. Usually, pre-release sales are included in first day sales, but this article doesn’t make that real clear either.

It’s interesting that the day after Bill Clinton’s My Life was published, the Bookscan numbers were released the very next day, why hasn’t that been done for Going Rogue? Is the media waiting to release the figures late tonight or on Saturday when fewer people are paying attention? That’s my guess.

I saw somewhere that the pre-release sales on Amazon were HUGE.

There would have been 299,999 without ME! I am thoroughly enjoying the book, read half of it last night, will finish it tonight. Easy reading, sort of like reading an adventure book rather than the political tome I thought it was going to be. She is what she is ... she and I would vote identically on issues ... so why should I look further? Great read ... get it if you haven’t already.

I just finished chapter 1. It started a little awkward, but by 5 pages in, I was hooked. A great read so far. :)

I picked up a copy yesterday and have already read about 2/3 of it. A really good read. So much of the silliness we heard in the media is refuted with the simple truth. Sarah Palin is a treasure and we are lucky that she is willing to be of service to our country.
