Religious Leaders Call for Civil Disobedience if Laws Don’t Respect Faith

A formidable coalition of 150 Catholic, Orthodox and evangelical leaders are calling on Christians in a new manifesto to reject secular authority – and even engage in civil disobedience – if laws force them to accept abortion, same-sex marriage and other ideas that betray their religious beliefs.

On Friday, these leaders released a 4,700-word document – called the "The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience."

The document was signed by leaders ranging from evangelical leader Chuck Colson to two of the leading Catholic prelates in the U.S., Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C. and Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, and calls on Christians to engage in civil disobedience to defend their doctrines.

The document also blasts the Obama administration, saying that social ills have grown since the election of President Obama, an abortion rights advocate, along with an erosion of what it calls "marriage culture" with the rise of divorce, greater acceptance of infidelity and the uncoupling of marriage from childbearing.

Colson says the project is aimed at instilling social conservative beliefs in a new generation of believers.

"We argue that there is a hierarchy of issues," he told The New York Times. "A lot of younger evangelicals say they're all alike. We're hoping to educate them that these are the three most important issues" – abortion marriage and religious liberty.

"We are Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical Christians who have united at this hour to reaffirm fundamental truths about justice and the common good, and to call upon our fellow citizens, believers and non-believers alike, to join us in defending them," says the declaration, which was drafted by Colson, an evangelical, and Princeton University professor Robert P. George, a Roman Catholic.

The declaration lists the "fundamental truths" as the "sanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage...

high time the churchs fought back.

for years now they have been attacked from the left and homosexuals.
No more now, the time has come to kick those out who are elected and use the religion to further their own agenda while in office.

when will someone ask why this president has not found a church yet.
If he can attend a place which he calls a church for 20 years which is a long time then why not find one now.
This crap of he likes ot pray in private is crap and won’t wsh anymore.

I suspect that you don’t quite grasp what “civil disobedience” means.

Show me in scripture where He advocated rebellion against the Roman authorities.

Reference to Roman authority is unnecessary, as 1) we are not under Roman authority, and 2) the principle is amply demonstrated in other contexts so as to make the point clear. For example:

Exodus 1:16-17 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

Or, as when Nebuchadnezzar ordered homage to his statue, the believer’s response was, and had to be, defiance:

Dan 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

More examples available upon request ...

We’re not under O.T. law. Jesus & Paul BOTH addressed this issue.

If you wish to counsel and/or personally

support a satanic government in any way or respect . . .

and if you think THAT would be Godly . . .

I can’t imagine that there’s anything useful I can say to you.

I personally believe that each person is responsible to ask God where HE would have them draw the line between obeying God vs man and when man has demanded to much against God’s priorities.

The Living Word within us . . . HIS HOLY SPIRIT is to be our moment by moment guide in concert with Scripture.

I can’t imagine that kowtowing to the AntiChrist will be applauded by God in the slightest.

INDEED.

The difference between

GOOD VS EVIL

is not really rocket science regardless of how skillful the evil doers are at making good sound evil and evil sound good.

It is a standard principle of reconciling the Old Testament with the New Testament to observe explicit reinstatement of OT principles in the NT. Murder, for example, is prohibited in both. Is there a repetition of the “conscientious defiance” principle in the NT? Yes:

Act 5:28-29 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Lest you argue the apostles were merely rejecting faulty religious authority but not civil authority, I would remind you that 1) in Israel at that time the Sanhedrin et al were the undifferentiated combination of religious and civil authority, acting as willing local agents of the Roman Empire (when it suited them, of course), and 2) Peter’s words enunciate a general principle of breathtaking scope: We obey God rather than Man. No differentiation on particular governments or OT/NT particulars, but stated as broadly as possible, so no reasonable reader of the future could possibly miss the point.

Next question?
