report argues that legalizing as many of the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants as possible could strengthen the economy and national security

Why do I get the feeling the 'fix the border' issue will be forgotten in the rush to condone criminal behavior?

Yes, their ‘path’ should be back to the US Embassy in Mexico City standing in line behind the rest of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th world huddled masses ‘yearning’ to be ‘free’.

Illegal aliens already have a path to citizenship.

They can return to their home countries. Go to the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy, obtain a visa application, and apply for permanent residency, like every other person on earth who would like to come here.

There is no way we can deport 12 million illegals. I don’t know a perfect answer but maybe this may be one. The only stipulation is that they be unable to vote until after the 2012 elections to guarantee that they understand what America is about. And another requirement is they will be required to take a class reading the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and pledge allegiance to the flat of the United States at every class opening. I just don’t know but something must be done because the corrupt King Obama will see that they vote in 2010.

“Millions of undocumented people in the U.S. should be given a path to legal status after the country finds a way to stop illegal immigration, ...”

Nothing new here. Which potential conservative candidates DO NOT favor “path to citizenship” amnesty?

Pay attention here folks. This, along with the comments yesterday on foreign students is part of the preparatory maneuvers for doing amnesty soon.

“But it should come with conditions, such as requiring new immigrants to learn English, pass criminal and medical background checks, and pay any taxes that they owe, the document states.”

Well, gotta give ‘em credit for thinking a bit harder on the subject then most.

“Millions of undocumented people in the U.S. should be given a path to legal status after the country finds a way to stop illegal immigration”

But, but....Janet Napalitano AND John McCain both insist the border IS secure!!! What complete idiots....if a country will NOT deport illegal aliens, why shouldn’t they ALL come???

BTW, many ‘progressives’ don’t agree.

Some ‘progressives’ understand the situation better than the GOP leaders.

Liberals Examine Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Progressives for Immigration Reform has released a new policy brief: “The Economic Impacts of Mass Immigration into the United States and the Proper Progressive Response.” The publication was authored by Philip Cafaro, an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University with a long history of progressive political activism. This study examines the impact that uncontrolled immigration has on America’s poor and argues that Democrats need to address their plight rather than swelling their ranks by importing less-skilled, low-wage foreign labor. The article reveals that current immigration policies widen income inequalities and concentrate immigration’s harms upon those Americans least able to afford them.

Among the article’s key findings:

* Increased immigration has swamped American labor markets with less-skilled, less-educated workers, driving down wages for working-class Americans.
* Government data show that when adjusted for inflation, average wages in some industries with high numbers of foreign workers are 45% lower than in 1980.
* Among the biggest economic losers of current high levels of immigration are poor Americans, ethnic minorities, and older immigrants. There is no evidence of a labor shortage at the lower end of the labor market.
* Current immigration policies further economic inequality in the United States.

“In today’s economic environment when many Americans are suffering from unemployment, job displacement and stagnant or declining wages, liberals should strive to set immigration at levels that work FOR America’s poorest citizens, rather than against them,” says Professor Cafaro. “Although the United States is a wealthy nation that can and should do its best to help the world’s poor, basic fairness requires that we address the needs of America’s poor before increasing the economic and wage competition they already face.”

We have 10% unemployment minimum amongst citizens, how will legalizing them help those citizens?

How is legalizing low wage earners beneficial to society when they won’t pay taxes and they and their families will be eligible for tax payer funded social service programs?

Since their families will be allowed in, how is it beneficial to have possibly 80 million new residents who are eligible for social service programs, whose kids will be using the school system, and town services will be strained.

I suppose these “owed taxes” are supposed to pay for the English classes, background checks, and other social services, that not only the ‘new’ citizen uses, but also the Ten relatives each will sponsor.

Fat chance. The CIS released a report years ago showing clearly it took three EMPLOYED generations for the social services consumed by the original immigrant to be paid back. Zero positive fiscal impact, until his great, Grand Children.

family earning $19,350 has $22,800 in income deductions which means they pay no federal taxSource

So, how is having 13-30 Millin low income earners added to our welfare load, people who DO NOT pay taxes now, and will likely NOT PAY TAXES in the future - how does this help us?

This is a culture where education is not considered important, where hard work is prized, but they are entitled to schools, welfare assistance, medical care, child care, and every other social program - yet historically neither they, nor their children will ever earn enough to actually pay the taxes to compensate for the resources they consume.

This is where the article should have ended.

Get back to me "after the country finds a way to stop illegal immigration."

The report is the product of a year of discussions by a 20-member nonpartisan panel and presentations from Gov. Bill Ritter, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, former Gov. Bill Owens and other political leaders.

Hey AP, if it's all so "nonpartisan" why did your article only list Democrats?

A recent Michigan State University study suggested bringing in more immigrants with the stipulation that their home countries send investors and businesses to hire them.

Jobs Americans aren’t allowed to do.
