Residents of the US capital may have to dig a little deeper into their pockets when they go grocery shopping once the city slaps a five-cent levy on each plastic bag issued at the checkout line.
The measure, which takes effect on January 1, 2010 and is the first such initiative in the United States, seeks to make consumers bear the brunt of clean up costs for the bags which currently are dispensed for free with a customer's purchases.

Great government thinking. A 5 cent tax on grocery bags. The gov’t knows full well people are going to pay this tax and will take this tax income and spend it on some welfare project. Then, when people do shift and the money dries up? Better make it 10 cents. All wrapped up in a “save the world” bow to make us all feel good about it. There’s NOTHING to do with protecting people with this tax. It’s about one more source of funding to feed an already bloated government. I wonder if a breakdown of the spent money will be made available to the public???

Has anyone stopped to think how much plastic is in a gallon of milk container?
There’s enough there to make the plastic bags to bring home all of the groceries for on trip to the store.
If they really wanted to cut down on plastic use, they would insist that everyone bring back their milk jugs to be refilled.
Now, about those plastic liners in cereal..................

But the stupid thing is, we used to have only paper and they said it used too many trees, so we went to plastic.
Now they want us to go back to paper?

This entire law is about money, not about saving the planet.
We now pay a deposit fee for water bottles. As I was crushing a milk gallon bottle I was wondering why aren't we being charged a deposit fee for these bottles? or mayonnaise? or peanut butter? or shampoo?
I think San Jose, Ca is scheduled to completely outlaw the use of plastic bags next year.
I always say ‘paper’ when I get groceries and I tell them it is because I like to keep the loggers working. Don’t think that is working, though, because every mill in my area is now shut down :(

Someone contaminates their (eco-green reusable) bag at home, in the car, or from their kid’s or pet’s poop (etc.).
Then they bring it into the store and contaminate the whole checkout line.
Next, we have a E. coli (or similar) problem and the inspectors have one heck of a problem back-tracking the source.
CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE...
Everyone needs to go to the grocers, fill up their cart with a lot of frozen stuff, go to check out and when they want your bags or to charge 5 cents for theirs, say “NEVERMIND!” and walk out. When the stores get tired of having to restock everything, they will change the law.
I can recall when plastic was a green-weenies dream. It saved all those trees from the paper mill.
Yeah I see a pattern here. First we cannot use paper and they pushed the heck out of plastic then they wanted us not to use the plastic. Now they want us to use the cheap cloth bags we have to now PURCHASE... next those will create a bacterial problem that contaminates the food we buy and then we will be back to paper or plastic or???? some new cr@p they want us to buy.

Clean up the Anacostia? Sheesh!
When I used to fish the upper Potomac from Ft McNair to the Wilson Bridge, we never, ever ventured in to the Anacostia. There’s everything in there from dead bodies to dead refrigerators. They’ve been trying to clean up that piece of water for as long as I can remember. They refuse to accept the fact that it is the people that inhabit the shores of the Anacostia that are the problem. They use the river as their personal garbage dump and “open-air” trash can. It (the river) is completely surrounded by the Southeast ghettos.
Dead bodies rot and old refrigerators can be recycled into planters around the house. It is the darn plastic bags that confound us!! :)

Under the new law, city businesses that sell food or alcohol must charge customers five cents for every disposable paper or plastic carryout bag.
To be honest I hate plastic bags. I have been using those reusable bags now for over 2 years
