AZ-Sen. 2010: AZ Sen Poll: McCain Opens Primary Lead (over Hayworth) (thanks a lot, Sarah)
Real Clear Politics / Rasmussen ^ | 2010-01-22

Posted on 01/22/2010 8:02:15 AM PST by rabscuttle385

Sen. John McCain (R) has known from an early stage that he could face a tough primary in his bid for re-election this year, and acted on it. He already launched radio ads touting his effort to block President Obama's "extreme left wing crusade." And just this week, Sen.-elect Scott Brown (R) recorded robocalls that went out to voters in Arizona.

Now, a Rasmussen poll (502 LVs, 1/20, MoE +/- 4.5%) shows the Maverick just over 50 percent in a potential matchup against former Rep. JD Hayworth -- not the best position for an incumbent to be, but an improvement over the dead heat Rasmussen found in November.

Primary Election Matchup
McCain 53 (+8 vs. last poll, 11/18)
Hayworth 31 (-12)
Simcox 4 (unch)
Und 8 (+1)

This was a McCain thread and it got hijacked by folks sniping at Palin and those supporting her. I think Sarah's support of McCain is admirable whether is politically savvy or not is irrelevant, she is not running for anything. Sarah Palin is not the titular head of the Republican party or the self professed pied piper for the conservative movement she can do what she wants. JD Hayworth couldn't even hold onto his own Congressional seat, what makes you think he is the next coming? I know Hayworth, I remember him and I remember him talking a good game and rolling over like the other RINOs. Is he better than McCain sure..on illegal immigration, but the rest of the issues, I wouldn't trust him as far as I can throw him. But then again some of you need somethkng to whine about...one word..more fiber.

Let’s not forget that Sarah almost helped get Hoffman, a 3rd party Conservative candidate, elected over the annointed GOP McLiberal - Scozzafava (sp?)...what’s the difference here - I really wish she’d reconsider!

She can be loyal to McLame if he emerges past August 31!

What issues does Sarah and John McCain agree on that’s a RINO position?

How about supporting bona fide and documented 'RINO' John McCain?

What? Please refer to the title of the thread.

What's hurting Hayworth the most in the polls is that he's taken a page from Fred Thompson's campaign play book. Publicly toy with the idea of running, tease your potential supporters with vague speculation, but wait until the last possible minute to declare your candidacy...or not.

Sarah's fault. /sarc

And did you hear, Scott Brown is going to be campaigning for Mr. McCain?

Whatever he does is irrelevant to this discussion. It is a miracle that he was able to run on several conservative positions and win in uber-lib Massachusetts. I'm still thrilled that he won in the bluest of blue states.

But Arizona is a red state. McCain is not a native of Arizona. That red state has been sending the Senate's most damaging RINO to to Senate for years, and there are strong indications that he can be defeated. Sarah should never have agreed to campaign with Juan. Huge mistake, it destroys her claim as a leader of the conservative movement. And her situation is totally different from Scott Brown's situation.

I think Sarah had grounds to refuse campaigning for McCain considering his senior staffer has done nothing but dump on Sarah.

“...might be coming around to a rightward turn in his thinking due to the Tea Party movement.”

This is my best hope for the current endorsement.

If McCain is moving right, Sarah’s move might make sense, particularly when combined with other reasons of gratitude she has for McCain’s contribution for her political power.

As far as I can tell, all but the most progressive politicians are moving right... Because the electorate has demanded it. Still, for moderates of all stripes, seeing firsthand the devastation left by progressive policies can precipitate more than an apparent move to the right. Some of our politicians, I dare to hope, have actually learned something practical Let’s hope they remember it.

I’ll be watching her other endorsements.

“Sarah Palin is not the titular head of the Republican party or the self professed pied piper for the conservative movement she can do what she wants.”

She has said she wants to support conservative candidates, no matter the party, right? She did say that. Is it not OK to ask her why she would insert herself and in so doing oppose the more conservative candidate in AZ, and perhaps even TX?

McCain is going to win and everyone knows this... so gathering some political capital for herself is no big deal...

[ I mean, McCain is the Kennedy in Arizona and Kennedy had to die before that Senate seat was ever changed... LOL...]

Hayworth lost his Congressional seat in 2006. Why does he deserve to be a United States Senator at this time? I personally would vote against him.

All 100% irrelevant. Times change and issues change. Plenty of pols have made comebacks after a loss. Reagan lost two or three presidential primaries before he won. Why did he deserve to be elected later??? Did you vote against him in 1980 and 1984?

You know what would be hilarious. If McCain's wife, daughter back gay marriage movement sunk his campaign. I've been a a JD Hayworth fan for a long time hearing him on Imus's radio shows. I still can't believe I actually voted for McCain last presidential election. Lesser of two evils is my excuse.

Lets put it this way: IF she support Rubio in Florida (and word is that she will eventually) and other conservatives and tea-party affiliated candidates this year for the November election, making speeches about common sense conservatism and just supporting McCain, her running mate......does that make her a betrayal or an RINO?

NO it does not, it’s a disappointment on one aspect, it’s not perfect, as no one person is perfect; but it’s not going to make you not pull that lever down for her, if it comes down to Sarah vs Obama;

she said that she was keeping her promise obviously to McCain to her detriment but can we also say that might keep her promise to support conservatives in 2010? you betcha!

You were saying ...

Yeah, there's always time to trash and undermine her if she runs for Prez.

Yeah, the Romney-ites tear her down during the election, a bunch of FReepers tear her down after the election, and then some more FReepers finish off the job that the Democrats started in the beginning, when she runs for President... LOL...

Isn't it great being a conservative?! :-)

> You have got to step back and look at the bigger picture.
> Stop putting Sarah in a snow globe. It serves none of us well.

It serves us in the way of ensuring McCain plays along and
doesn’t negate Scott Brown’s 41st vote in the short term.
Since McCain is running for re-election, the last thing
he’s going to do is act — and vote — like a RINO.

Trust in the common sense of Arizona Conservatives to
remember McCain’s RINO record as we do, and end his reign
before August 31.

She energized his nearly dead campaign. Many voted for him only because her. He used her and then had his staffers stab her in the back - he wanted Lieberman, not her. He was more or less forced to take her, not that it really matter because McCain and most of us knew he had no chance to win. She owes him nothing. Perhaps he just hired her to make himself look more conservative. He also has stated that he will keep pushing for amnesty. That borders on treason.

Why did Sarah get into bed (symbolically) with a RINO like McCain to begin with? A true conservative would have stuck to conservative principles and said no, and bided her time so she could run on her own without the RINO albatross around her neck.
