The eco-pirates got off lightly. I thought whalers carried harpoons:

Modern day whalers need the right tools for the right job, just like in the old days.

Now that I've had my laff for the morning, "I'll tell you what"...

What if these hippies go back to port and meet with some sort of misfortune while they're out being hippies on shore leave?

Of course the Japanese will be looking around puzzled saying "we didn't see nothin'".

Who's gonna push the issue?

Video seemed to be of Steve Irwin ship turning and hitting a ship marked Research ship.

I’m not sure if that video was supposed to be the incident under discussion.

"Research." BS. It's a factory ship with a full food processing factory on board.

Screw those poachers.

The really funny thing about this is that if these people stopped making such a fuss the whaling business would probably end inside of 20 years.

The Japanese just HATE to be bossed around.

I understand the feeling.

All whales are not created equal. The Japanese take Minke whales which even eco-nuts have to admit are not endangered, threated or anything else.

The Japanese are not "wiping out" anything.

Pretty much.

They do actually do do research and since their data is objective rather then "whale hugger" it is pretty reliable.

As to what they do with the whales afterwords, there is a small market for whale meat. People do still eat it, mostly older people, but at a harvest rate of three hundred a year that is not a lot of meat.

The hunt is mostly an "Up yours!"

The reason it’s called ‘research’ or ‘scientific whaling’ is because of a compromise back when the hippies and landlubbers hijacked the International Whaling Commission.

As I expect you know, there is more than one species of whale in the oceans. Many are not endangered, and these are the ones currently being hunted. Back then the hippies had to admit there was no reason to ban the hunting of all whales and so they agreed to ban the hunting of endangered whales while non-endangered whales could still be hunted, only it was called research.

-A nice stepping stone towards a complete ban on whaling since the whalers didn’t realize the hippies were acting in bad faith and have since used the ‘research’ label to attack sustainable whaling.

PS: Whales are delicious :)
