Murder Suspect Was Questioned in Plot Against Professor [Amy Bishop again]

The neurobiologist accused of killing three colleagues at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, on Friday was also a suspect in a 1993 mail bombing plot against a Harvard Medical School professor, the Boston Globe quoted law enforcement official as saying Sunday.

Amy Bishop was questioned along with her husband, James Anderson, after two 6-inch pipe bombs were sent to the Newton, Mass., home of Dr. Paul Rosenberg. While opening the package, the doctor saw the wires and a cylinder and fled the house.

The Globe said investigators searched Dr. Bishop’s and Mr. Anderson’s home, but the United States Attorney’s office did not seek any charges against them, and no one was ever charged in the case.

Early Saturday, the police in Huntsville charged the neurobiologist Dr. Bishop, 45, with capital murder in the shootings Friday that also left three people wounded during a faculty meeting. Dr. Bishop, who appeared to have had a promising future in the biotechnology business, had recently been told she would not be granted tenure, university officials said.

The revelation about the 1993 plot came after word that Dr. Bishop was linked to another death. On Saturday afternoon, the police in Braintree, Mass., announced that 24 years ago, Dr. Bishop had fatally wounded her brother, Seth Bishop, in an argument at their home, which The Boston Globe first reported on its Web site. The police were considering reopening the case, in which Dr. Bishop was not charged and the report by the officer on duty at the time was no longer available, said Paul Frazier, the Braintree police chief.

Doubtful there are any more unexplained deaths in her past. She keeps it cool until she erupts once per decade. You have all the rest correct. I believe you know people in academia and their tendencies much better than I do

You lumped one of my sons, one of my daughters, and one of my friends all in that one statement.

I hate stereotyping.

Charles Manson is "Mr. Manson" and Sarah Palin is "Mrs. Palin."

Didn't they refer to Meat Loaf as "Mr. Loaf" once?

Honestly, I think they did.

What would they call Lady GaGa?

The NYT style guide, unlike AP, requires the use of Mr, Mrs, Ms, Dr, etc in every reference.

I don't have a problem with the Mr., Mrs., used throughout an article after the initial title (Dr., President, Governor) is used. But after that initial mention it is one thing to use the Mr. or Mrs. designation but here you have the professional designation being used throughout. And yet you do not see Governor Palin used in the same manner.

[Amy Bishop again]

Every time I see her name, my mind goes to a place where I get this thought that 15 years later, she'll be doing porn. (and it's not a good place)

If you can see Amy Bishop, Amy Bishop can see you.

And if Amy Bishop can see you, you may be only moments away from death.

Please point us toward a source that will help all of us become more proficient searchers.

Actually I suspect regular FR posters are probably way, way above average in internet search skills, and are already in a good place to continuing improving already good skills. Nothing beats practice, practice, practice, which serious debaters here get a lot of. Plus there's a fair amount of exposure to posts where the poster spells out how they found the info they're posting.

But in the general population -- even the general population of college graduates -- most people seem to have little idea how to go about searching beyond typing a keyword or name in the simple Google search box -- don't even know the advanced search exists, much less have any idea what they could do with it. And few seem to be familiar with free specialized search systems, such as PubMed. A serious college-level course could be taught on internet searching, and hopefully that will start turning up in college curriculums soon.
