GOP Begins "Romney 2012" Campaign (with a little help from glad-to-help Liberals; take a read)
Vanity, et al | 2-19-10 | TitansAFC

Posted on 02/19/2010 2:40:09 PM PST by TitansAFC

And so it begins:

CPAC embraces the new Mitt Romney
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/33161.html

South Carolina mulls 2012: Romney? Palin? Huck?
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/South-Carolina-mulls-2012_-Romney_-Palin_-Huck_-84732787.html

Romney now biggest threat to Obama head to head
http://hotair.com/archives/2010/02/18/ppp-poll-romney-now-biggest-threat-to-obama-head-to-head/

These are just a few examples from the last two days.

You'll also notice the (once again) packed straw poll at CPAC, and a sudden surge in Freepers attacking Sarah Palin at every turn.

It seems the push is already at full force. Mitt Romney is the guy to beat, like it or not (remember that McCain enjoyed -5% support at FR during the campaign), and the GOP is circling the wagons early this time.

Add to that several weekend columns out-of-nowhere attacking Sarah Palin again (George Will, Dorothy Rabinowitz, Kathleen Parker, et al).

let there be no doubt, the organized effort is afoot.

Everyone in the country knows as much about Sarah now as they ever will. Most primary voters will know that she can’t win so will vote for who they think can win - Romney. That’s how McCain got the nomination. Voters weren’t crazy about him but they thought he had the best chance to win. I don’t think it’s a good idea to vote that way because it means voters aren’t really that crazy about the nominee so won’t work hard for him. I think Dems voted for Kerry for the same reason - they thought he would be able to beat Bush. but they weren’t really that crazy about him so he didn’t win. They really did seem to like Obama so he won. There’s a lesson in there somewhere.

IF the republicans could set all state primaries on the same day, with no cross-over votes, we may get a fair candidate.

As it was in 2008, by the time we voted in Maryland, there were 2 pubbie candidates on the ballot, McCain and Romney (who had "suspended" his campaign). It was basically a done deal. The poor folks in many other states, didn't even have 2 names to choose from.

The cross-overs will vote for whoever they see as our weakest candidate.

Piss on Romney. I wouldn’t vote for him if he were the last Republican on earth.

Disregarding the momentum of the Hoffman race will be a fatal move if Steele and Company are predisposed to subject voters (many of them independents with no great love for Romney) to it.

"Unfortunately, the GOP Primary set-up favors the front-runner, and Moderates."

That may be true. And, I'll stipulate that - for whatever reason - Romney is the darling of the GOP money machine. But, unlike some others - Reagan, Dole, HW Bush, Nixon - whose "turn it was", Romney is a little different. Romney doesn't have nearly the name recognition or longevity on the national scene as the others did clearly did. I bet well over 70% of the national electorate couldn't pick Romney out of a line-up. IOW, he's a guy who may be first in line, but no one has really heard of him. It's kind of without precedent in the last 70 years of Republican politics.

I don't think he'll get the nomination because he doesn't have the charisma, and because he's HATED by the SoCons. I still think it will either be Palin - if she performs well in the debates - or someone like DeMint, Thune or Barbour if Palin falls apart. Sure, those three don't have Romney's name recognition (as limited as it is), but no one hates them, either.

“And piss on CPAC. Nothing but a RINO fest.”

LOL! Despite the naysayers out there, I think Palin is a lock for the GOP nomination. There are too many conservatives who will vote for her in the primaries. Romney does not elicit passion—but passivity.

From what I remember from his campaign, Romney was the only candidate who had a conservative, detailed plan for an economic recovery - it was much better than the McCain campaign (who I voted for, btw) and of course 0’s “hope and change”.

He wanted to lower the corp tax rate from I think 25% to 5%, abolish the capital gains tax, etc., etc....

Two makes for a coincidence. Thirty is a coordinated assault. They want Romney, they do NOT want Sarah, and they are going to pull out all of the stops in every way possible to make sure Mitt Romney is the nominee in 2012.

That is EXACTLY right, sir!

If Romney is what the GOP really wants, they can have him and whatever happens, they will have to live with. You would have thought 2006 and 2008 would have taught them a lesson but I guess not.

He will be hard to stop.

He will be very hard to stop. Even with conservatives united behind Reagan in 1980, his campaign was on the ropes going into NH. The party machinery was united against him and Bush was flying high coming out of Iowa.

The polls everywhere showed Bush ahead on the eve of the NH primary. Reagan turned it around at the 11th hour through the sheer force of his personality and stupid mistakes by the Bush campaign (i.e. -- the NH debate and "I paid for this microphone Mr. Green!").

There is no unity among conservatives this time.

Oh, I’ll vote. But I’ll write in Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo. They may not be on the ballot - and wouldn’t win if they were - but they are both true-blue conservatives and I will have voted my conscience.

There is a triangle alliance going on here on FR: Mittbots, Paulbots, and Anti-Obamaites are all working together to take down Sarah. And you’re right about the piling on. Anything positive gets posted about Sarah, someone conveniently ‘finds’ that Univision interview and posts it again. And of course, when someone posts a ‘positive’ article about Romney, all the Mittbots come out of the woodwork, only to go back into hiding to wait for the next email.

The sad thing is that conservtives could have coalesced around Palin even more so than now.

But weak-minded conservatives bought the relentless BS attacks on her in the media...she still has a significant part of the based locked up though.

It’s not impossible for her but it will be an uphill grind.

Note: To all of you anti Palin crowd on FR....

...KMA Dimwits...the only smart one’s were the closet Mitt fans(they’ve achieved their goal)...the others were and are just stupid and easily divided.

Ann Coulter was on Hannity & calling from CPAC. She stated the “good money” was on Romney and in essence he was next in line like Reagan in ‘80. Very disappointing...and not one word of “RomneyCare” or Sarah was mentioned. Clearly, Coulter has moved toward the Republican Party elites.
