Third-hand Tobacco Smoke Causes Cancer, Agenda Driven Grant Junkie Study Shows
Free Republic | February 19, 2010 | Eric Blair

This is not from the Onion. Your tax money actually went to fund this as a "real" important study.

According to "research" Third Hand Smoke is a killer and smelling stale smoke that sticks to smokers clothes after they come inside from the cold where they have been exiled to, causes cancer.

That stale cigarette smoke smell in hotel rooms and bars is more than annoying - it could be hazardous to your health, according to new research from a team led by scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Infants and toddlers are at greatest risk, the study reveals. Nicotine in third-hand smoke, the residue from tobacco smoke that clings to surfaces long after a cigarette has been extinguished, reacts with the common indoor air pollutant nitrous acid to produce dangerous carcinogens, the study shows.

"The burning of tobacco releases nicotine in the form of a vapor that adsorbs strongly onto indoor surfaces, such as walls, floors, carpeting, drapes and furniture. Nicotine can persist on those materials for days, weeks and even months," says Hugo Destaillats, a chemist with the Indoor Environment Department of Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division.

"Our study shows that when this residual nicotine reacts with ambient nitrous acid it forms carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines or TSNAs," said Destaillats. "TSNAs are among the most broadly acting and potent carcinogens present in unburned tobacco and tobacco smoke."

"We know that these residual levels of nicotine may build up over time after several smoking cycles, and we know that through the process of aging, third-hand smoke can become more toxic over time," says Destaillats.

The authors say theirs is the first study to quantify the reactions of third-hand smoke with nitrous acid

This is why the reductio ad absurdum argument doesn't work with Statists and leftists. They have no shame. Normal people would be embarrassed to lie like this for cash. Unless that normal person was a prostitute. At least prostitutes provide a service that has some value.

A few years ago I wrote what I thought at the time to be satire about second hand smoke.

Man’s Impending Death To Be Caused By Second Hand Smoke

Atlanta, Ga. July 13, 2007– In a joint press conference on Friday, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the premature death of a Montana man will be caused by exposure to Second Hand Smoke.

“After extensive conversation with the SAMMEC computers and after long and grueling hours of torturing the data until it told us what we want to hear, we are finally prepared to definitively state that Richard Mooreheads’ death will be a direct result of his exposure to Second Hand Smoke.” Said WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan “We can find no other logical reason for Mr. Moorehead's soon to be tragic demise other than his exposure to SHS.”

The soon to be deceased Mr. Moorehead, 54, an unemployed HIV positive, type 2 diabetic, MS, ALS and kidney dialysis patient who is addicted to crystal meth and heroin, was shocked and visibly angry when told of his diagnosis and cause of death. Reached at his home in an exclusive gated trailer park community in Missoula, MT, Mr. Moorehead blamed his impending death on the careless brutes with cigarettes down at Jim’s Roadhouse Bar on Highway 263. “I’ve never smoked tobacco in my life. But that darn Jim’s Bar was always filled with that there smoke.”

Second Hand Smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of a smoker. It causes an estimated 450,000 deaths per day, according to health authorities, Al Gore and Dionne Warwick’s Psychic Friends Network. It’s also been known to cause AIDS, herpes, hemorrhoids, athlete’s foot and jock itch.

These statists and social engineers have no shame. The ends justify the means. Next thing you know they will tell us that the exhaust from our Chevy Suburbans will cause the planet to burst into a great big ball of fire. Oh wait, they did try that.

As Dr. Michael Siegelof the Boston University School of Public Health points out in the crusade to coerce smokers to quit, they are doing more harm than good by exposing themselves as liars to the public:

Even just focusing on the most vulnerable - infants and children - anti-smoking groups could make the argument that smokers should not be allowed to care for young children, either in day care settings or nursery school settings. They would also be able to argue that smokers should not be allowed to adopt or foster infants or young children, even if they only smoke outside of the home.

These are drastic measures that severely interfere with the freedom, autonomy, and rights of smokers. Surely, we would not want to impose such measures in the absence of definitive evidence that children are being substantially harmed by the tobacco-specific nitrosamines produced from nicotine residues resulting from deposition from the skin and clothing of smokers.

Unfortunately, the thirdhand smoke researchers have already disseminated - internationally - the conclusion that smokers pose a significant threat to infants and children even by their mere presence in the environment of these young people. Even if they do not smoke in their presence.

Their own arrogance and greed will destroy them.

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a grant to determine whether a fart causes second hand cancer. But maybe there has been.

What about 5th hand smoke? Have you ever shaken hands with somebody who saw someone sitting at a bar next to a smoker.

I did. He keeled over and died right there. It wasn’t pretty.

Don’t let your olfactory senses point you to Statism.

Big PhRMA will come after you there too. I found that out. They fund these Statists. They want a monopoly on nicotine products.

This has never been about public health. They don’t give a rat’s ass if anyone drops dead tomorrow.

Libs think that conservatives are “corporatists”. No conservative or libertarian I know trusts their freedom to a company anymore than they do to a politician.

Either one will throw you under the bus for a $20 bill.

Third hand smoke!!! Puhleezee!!

Every one needs to buy a face mask!!!

Frankly, your perfume and after shave are offensive to me. Get a grip folks..The smokers of this world are not killing anybody. The airplanes overhead the diesel on the road might also contribute. Ya think?? The treated food we eat..the enhanced water we drink have no affect?

As a good friend of mine says...

The non-smoking, exercising vegans of the world will die some day and ask WHY!!!

This just in:
New Study Reveals Carrying Cigs More Dangerous Than Cell Phones!

Men who carry cigarette packs in their shirt pocket contract breast cancer at rates 10 times greater than heavy cell phone users get brain tumors, says a new report from Greener Is Gooder, a global warming activist group. "Just being near a cigarette, lit or un-lit is dangerous" says lead investigator John Van Warmer. "This fourth-hand smoke is deadlier than we imagined. We need to do further studies to assess the risk to non-smokers exposed to unlit cigarettes." He concluded "We will also be pushing for legislation to curtail cell phone use given its health risk to users."
Greener Is Gooder recieved a $10 million subsidy from the federal government to conduct this study.

Here's something to put it all into proper perspective. For something to rise above background noise to the lowest level of showing some kind of statistical relationship, the risk must be at least 2. The relationship between lung cancer and secondhand smoke is between 1.14 and 1.16. By comparison, the risk for lung cancer among those drinking whole milk is 2.4. The claim for "third hand smoke" is utterly and completely without any kind of statistical or scientific basis.
“There is no bench and lab, and no epidemiology proof of cause of cancer in side stream or exhaled smoke, and certainly no proof of cancer caused by residue of tobacco smoke on clothes, furniture, carpets, or furniture.

“If the cause of cancer were understood, it might be possible for public health officials to make claims of this or that, but mostly they appeal to people’s anxieties and ignorance.

“At this point, after expenditures of billions, we know that cancer is mostly increased by age; smoking cigarettes causes cancer; and there are a few—very few—chemicals and electromagnetic/radiation factors that can cause cancer.

“No one, ever, has shown that tobacco smoke residue causes cancer. In fact no one has shown that side stream or exhaled tobacco smoke causes cancer. The issue for anti-tobacco crusaders is smell and preferences, and interfering with smokers, not some serious public health issue.

So, by their reasoning, we all (including them) should have died off a long, long, time ago. I say “complainers” first.

You missed the above line, I guess. Funny stuff, even though it seems to be coming our way.
