Charlie Rangel was alone and lost Wednesday, an aging and now powerless pol who didn't know where to go or what to do.
He had made a wrong turn coming out of a memorial service for another old bull of the House, Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), and was by himself under the vast and majestic expanse of the Capitol dome.
The usual scurrying aides, the armload of briefing papers, the multiple cell phones and other trappings of influence were gone. Capitol guards eyed Rangel with concern as he wandered toward unfamiliar territory on the Senate side, but they kept their distance.
Rangel talked past questions from a reporter who approached. "I'm still in mourning for my friend Jack Murtha," he told the Daily News. "I'm not discussing anything." Then he briefly offered a few thoughts.
"Forty years - it's been 40 years," Rangel said with a smile of his 20 terms in the House. That's half the life of the 79-year-old Rangel, a son of Harlem who became one of Washington's most extraordinary powerbrokers.

It's not fair because I only cheated the government out of a measly $1.3 million
They actually removed him? I am amazed. amazed. They finally did something right. Now they need to get rid of Barney.
Yeah gee golly. My heart breaks for this crooked, vile, race-baiting rat bastid.
While we’re at it....doesn’t ANYone question how someone who has done nothing but serve in Congress for 40 years ends up a multi-millionaire?
We know what they make per year. This drives me freakin’ nuts. Crooked pricks, and they just get away with it year after year after year after year.....
The guy spends his entire adult life extorting money from me and my parents only to not follow the same rules himself.
Now he’s been “stripped of his power.”
Yeah, I almost feel sorry for him.
This criminal belongs in prison, not still in Congress.
BOO HOOO HOO! Is this enough sympathy?
Me too.
Oh, God. A pity party from the NY Daily News. Ain’t worth the ink nor the trees dying.
It’d be worth letting this guy continue to help dispense trillions of dollars of borrowed money if only it’ll make him feel better about himself.
How did Charlie ever get his hair so straight?
Oh boo freaking hoo.....
my heart breaks that he’s still in Congress and not in jail.
Good riddance... and now look at what is replacing him... sheesh.
The crook deserves to be “sad, lost and alone in his own thoughts” ... IN PRISON.
Mark Twain wrote that "Congress is America's only native criminal class."
AW this is so sad for Rangal.
We should send the waaaaaambulance for him
Reminds me of the Chicken of the Sea commercial where Charley the Tuna is rejected, “Poor Charley”
He didn’t give a fig for Adam Clayton Powell when he ran him out of office - the previous devious lout from Harlem
I can picture it now, Rangel, Dodd and Barney as cell mates.
