More Bush Lawyers Join Attacks on Liz Cheney Ad (Liz informs the public of Al-Qaeda within DOJ)
Newsweek ^ | 3/5/2010 | Michael Isikoff

Posted on 03/05/2010 5:11:39 PM PST by tobyhill

In recent days the Justice Department has been getting angry phone calls about the "Qaeda" lawyers supposedly hired by Attorney General Eric Holder. The reason? An unusually ferocious Web ad by Liz Cheney's advocacy group, Keep America Safe, targeting Justice lawyers who previously did pro bono work for Guantánamo detainees. The ad—in one frame, a headline refers to the DOJ as the "Department of Jihad"—has been denounced as McCarthyism by liberal critics. It's also being condemned by a growing number of former George W. Bush administration lawyers. Ted Olson, who served as Bush's solicitor general, says he has the "greatest respect" for lawyers who represented Gitmo clients; they were acting "consistent with the finest traditions of the legal profession," he says. He calls the attacks on one of the targets, Deputy Solicitor General Neal Katyal, "outrageous." Four years ago, Katyal represented Salim Ahmed Hamdan, Osama bin Laden's former driver, in a landmark Supreme Court case that overturned the military tribunals that Bush created. (Katyal did a "marvelous job" on the case, says Olson.)

Well, OK... so they’re talented lawyers. That’s not the point.

I'm not sure what side you're taking?

He's saying that Liz shouldn't criticize Al-Qaeda lawyers working in the DOJ. Don't we still have freedom of speech in this country?

Hah, most of the "Bush lawyers" were Clinton left-overs at Justice. Rush warned about them that they were snakes just waiting to pounce on anything and blow the issue out of proportion, even creating false stores through "leaks" from DOJ.

Olsen, I truly don't understand considering his wife, Barbara, was blown out of the sky by terrorists.

What kind of defense does he think that the mastermind of that fateful day deserves - civilian or military and who does he believe should be in the position to make those calls - people who've spent their careers defending American values or terrorists' values?

I don’t want to hear a word from Ted Olson! Not one word.

Go back to promoting gay marriage and stay out of the war on terror.

Ted Olsen has turned out to be a real schmuck.

Glad to see that Mark Levin doesn't agree with Ted Olsen.

I would have had no idea what any of the Cheneys were saying if the demonrats didn’t keep talking about it.

No doubt most of them are Clinton lawyers, except for the seven or eight who were fired by Pres. Bush in his second term.

I do not have any problem with lawyers representing al Quaeda and their ilk before our courts or military tribunals. It is a tough job, but someone has to do it. Under our Constitution, the accused are entitled to legal representation.

But Liz Cheney is right on this issue. These same lawyers should not now be representing the United States in matters that could harm or even help their former clients. In fact, these lawyers are rquired to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. This one does not pass the smell test for me.

"the finest traditions of the legal profession"

I.e. defending the guilty and frustrating justice, using sophistry to evade the clear language of the Constitution.

If ever someone finds a way to offshore the parasitic jobs of the legal profession to India or China, then we will see the ruling elites begin to change their minds about globalism, and we will all be safer.

Maybe it was because his wife died in 9/11. Maybe it messed him up,, seriously. Not being sarcastic here, but some people who have suffered a loss go mental,,and are not the best to suggest policy.

Total BS. How come Jihadist filth get the best US corporate lawyers defending them pro bono? They should get shitty lawyers just like other indigent schmucks. I had to hire a lawyer once and he was awful. How Jihadists are entitled to really good lawyers? And contrary to Ted Olsen I don't look at the legal profession as being particularly honorable

The answer is that the lawyers who defend Jihadists are looking for notoriety, recognition and bragging rights at liberal cocktail parties

He says criticism is ok, slander is not if I understand him and I think I do. Everybody hates lawyers until they need one. If we ever say that those accused of wrongdoing by the government cant have a lawyer, them our freedom is gone. It could happen to anyone here and, believe me, you will be screaming for a lawyer to protect you from the government!

“Ted Olson is a respected conservative lawyer of great skill, integrity and intellect. He helped Bush win the Florida vote challenge. Sorry, but I will take his judgement over Ms. Cheney on this one.”

He has gone over to the Dark Side —pimping homosexual marriage in California.

Liz didn't slander anyone or any agency. Holder refused to disclose 7 lawyers now with the DOJ who worked for Al-Qaeda prisoners as private lawyers.

Ted Olson is a respected conservative lawyer of great skill, integrity and intellect.

It's the fact that he, and so many other lawyers, regard their loyalty to their profession, their traditions and their colleagues with a higher priority than their own nation and her defenders DURING A WAR.

It is NOT something to be proud of that you are defending enemy combatants who have killed Americans on the battlefield, and would love to kill as many more as they could.

That used to be called treason. It's despicable.
