Stupak Touts Sidebar Bill Banning Abortion $, Pro-Lifers Skeptical

Washington, DC -- Congressman Bart Stupak, the de facto leader of the coalition of pro-life Democrats who may vote no on the Senate health care bill because of its massive abortion funding, expressed optimism that a deal could be work out on a sidebar bill to ban funding that goes along with the main bill.

What a fraud.
He just wants Nancy to give him a 'credible' fig-leaf so that he can claim that he didn't know abortion funding was going to be included in the bill...

Here’s the obvious trap with this one - the “side bar” bill will contain the anti-abortion language plus some horrendously bad provisions no republican could possible swallow. When the bill goes down the gang shrugs their shoulders and say well, we tried but the republicans wouldn’t let us.

Stupak must mean “Traitor” in slavic.

I guess Obama made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Maybe the FBI got some 8 x 10 glossies of Stupak doing something he shouldn’t or maybe George Soros or the Saudis made a direct deposit into a Swiss Bank Account for Stupak.
OR, maybe Obama offered Stupak a new Czarship.

There will be no sidebar bill Stupak. There will be the Senate Bill, period, end of statement.Your demagoguery has gotten you nowhere and you are a disgrace to the pro life community which you supposedly support. You are a Democrat first and foremost and life is what happens while you are playing politician.

Any way to do bundling that does not lend itself to Lucy-pulls-away-the-football at the last moment? Leaving the House with a vote for the Senate bill and no sidebar? I don’t see Bummer as above that kind of maneuver, or for that matter Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

They don’t even have the decency to be bought out with transparency.

Perhaps the Massa treatment closed the deal.

Nancy did say she had the votes. Its just that some members didn’t know they were voting for it yet.

Oh yeah, and the Senate had better be the first to approve the sidebar. Otherwise, SUCKAS!

This also could be just more feinting intended to try to wear Congress down.

Stupak is a phony and a fraud. This waffling only makes him look cheap and stupid. Perhaps the side-bar he’s talking about is the place where he get’s his scotch.

Stupe-ak had a chance to defund Planned Parenthood and he voted against defunding! I just hope the other pro-life Dims have the courage of their convictions and vote no on this monstrosity that will include payment for abortion.

Not to be Pollyanna but if you read the entire article, this sounds very involved and difficult. The Senate rejected the Stupak amendment the first time around and Durbin said last week that there are not the votes in the Senate for it. I’m not so sure the Senate will agree to this, and they may have to, up front, to give Stupak cover to vote for this ungodly thing.

No way in hell a separate anti-abortion bill would make it through the senate. There’s no way Stupak is this stupid, or maybe he thinks the public won’t realize that and he can set himself up as “trying”?

You cannot do this on reconciliation. This is far beyond the Senate bill and reconciliation is not available. sorry.
