S-300s Crowd The Coast
The Strategy Page ^ | 4/11/2010 | The Strategy Page

China now has eight battalions of S-300PMU2 anti-aircraft missile systems, on the coast opposite Taiwan. These missiles have a range of 200 kilometers, and are positioned to fire on Taiwanese fighters as soon as they begin to cross the 180 kilometer wide Taiwan straits. This deployment dismayed most Taiwanese, although Taiwanese military leaders pointed out that they have Patriot anti-aircraft missiles deployed along the island coast. But the Patriot only has a range of 70 kilometers, and no one wants to talk about any electronic countermeasures Taiwan might have, that could neutralize the S-300 radars and missiles. It gets worse. Two years ago, China began upgrading its anti-aircraft missiles, along its southern coast (facing Taiwan), from S-300PMU1 and S-300PMU2 systems to the S-300PMU3 (which has been renamed the S-400 because of the large number of improvements.) The S-300/400 system is roughly equivalent to the U.S. Patriot system, and was originally known as the SA-10 to NATO, when the system first appeared in the early 1980s. There have been many upgrades since.

The article doesn’t say when these things were deployed. Is this a recent development?

It doesn’t but I we can assume so. And my anticipated response from our government is a lock.

"Taiwan is screwed."

No more than we are. Obamunism is alive and well in what used to be a free and prosperous America.

I hadn’t even thought about Taiwan! The way the USA fuhrer has treated Israel, Taiwan is certainly completely on its own! Be ready for a China grab in the next 2 years (and I will give you the credit for calling it).

It may take us 50 years (or maybe a century) to recover from the “foreign policy” dictated by ayers, soros and wright!

Coddle our enemies and screw our friends.

Yep. As we continue our decline under O, the Chinese and Russians are going to be emboldened to make their moves. You say two years but I think it will be sooner than that. The Chinese and Russians have a limited time in which to operate before Obama and his Commie brethren are ousted.

What I can’t understand about home grown communists, is why they want to SUBMIT to foreign communists?

Why not make america THE BEST, and then TAKE OVER communist countries abroad?

Is it not the case that once foreign communists march into a defeated america, that they will have all local traitors (communists) shot, and then announce that THIS is the fate of all traitors going forward?

http://www.sinodefence.com/army/surfacetoairmissile/s300.asp

“...By the end of 2008, the PLAAF will be operating a total of 160 S-300 launchers grouped into 10 SAM battalions (40 batteries). These launchers include 32 S-300PMUs, 64 S-300PMU1s, and 64 S-300PMU2s. Each launcher is equipped with four ready-to-launch missiles and 4~8 spare missiles. If taking additional spare and practice missiles purchased from Russia into account, the total number of missiles received by the PLAAF has amounted well above 1,000.”

FYI.

Air Defence Update

S-300 SAM system – CONFIRMED!
There have been consistent reports of Iranian interest in the advanced Russian S-300 SAM system and even rumors of deployment but these have been unsubstantiated for years. As of Jan 2009 it can be confirmed via commercial satellite imagery that Iran does possess S-300 SAMs. The likely model is S-300 PMU-2 although the slightly older PMU-1 is a possibility. The latest S-400 cannot be ruled out but this seems less likely. The likely source of this system remains Russia although China also manufactures S-300 PMU-1 systems.

Any bets on how Iran just announced its missile defense system is going into full production?

America has GOT to quit buying China’s stuff. Just do without. Create domestic demand for the same product.

The S-300/400 system is roughly equivalent to the U.S. Patriot system............ Now that is an understatement if I ever heard one.

I know. Our Patriots are vastly superior and they are getting improved almost every day.Lockheed Martin has proposed an air-launched variant of the PAC-3 missile for use on the F-15C. Other aircraft, such as the F-22 and P-8A Poseidon, have also been proposed

Who do you imagine our “home grown communists” work for? Foreign communists are more advanced like the socialists who run the EU. Everyone knows that... :)

Vastly superior? That would be almost funny was it not for the fact that the USAF and USN airforces are not particularly laughing. One could be correct in saying the PAC 3 sensors are superior to the S300/400, but in terms of range and kinematics it is a different question. As for vastly superior, that is an overstatement.

Possible counter: hundreds of drones with enhanced radar reflection, to suck the Chinese into firing on a non-existing attack and waste their SAMs.

I think placing a Patriot missile on a F-15 is rather impressive feat.
