WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days.

Before deciding what revenue options are best for dealing with the deficit and the economy, Obama said in an interview with CNBC, "I want to get a better picture of what our options are."

If it’s a tax, it’s an option for the Dems to enact. They’ll hire a PR firm, change it from “value added tax” to “value added fee” and shove it down our throats like everything else this a$$hat administration has done.

how can you have a VAT on ‘some’ people.

The "progressives" are working on that. They'll probably settle on some kind of subsidy for lower income persons to compensate for the VAT's "regressive" impact.

Even the dems in the senate aren't stupid enough to push this. Last week McCain attached a sense of the senate resolution to the Unemployment Extension bill saying that the senate did not support a VAT. The resolution passed 85 to 13. Obama is to the left of 3/4 of his own party on this issue.

To me it’s a done deal.

How can they pay for all the extra spending - cutting the Pentagon from 600 Bill to a 100 is a non starter.

Volcker is on board, and the creditworthiness of the US may be on the line.

Take a carton of milk - add a penny when the cow is milked, add a penny when the milk is pasteurised, add a penny when it’s packaged.

When it’s transported add a carbon fee, perhaps a couple of pennies.....and when it hits the distribution center, add a penny, and when it hits retail, add a penny.

Less than a dime added per carton of milk.

Who could oppose that? Hehehe.

Remember the soda tax - a penny an ounce, they said.

Is there no end to this faction’s desires?

Nothing short of America's total demise will suffice.

Liar, yes, but I'd suggest that both a consumption tax and a carbon tax are essential if we're to at least maintain a Euro standard of living.

When discussing these issues with democrats whose minds are open, I suggest the nation should follow the Obama "model" of transparency.

Rather than a VAT, a monstrosity to administer, we should adopt a national sales tax, in the 10%-15% range. Rather than Cap and Trade, a gasoline tax in the 25 to 20 cents per gallon range would suffice, I'm told. I go with 30 to 50 cents, myself.

These taxes are necessary if our children and grandchildren are to enjoy the benefits of cradle to grave government supervision of our lives our liberal bretheran desire.

It does get them thinking, even opens ears to alternatives, like maybe we don't need to nationalize health care after all.

Just a suggestion, but these taxes are necessary if the laws on the books today are still on the books five years from now.

VAT has always been part of Obama's calculations for his socialization of America. His minions been floating trial balloons since last spring. With Volcker (Reagan's former Fed Chairman) giving him cover last week, he's now going to try and hide behind this phony commission and then have Reid do his dirty work through reconciliation.

Senate Democrats' budget to allow use of reconciliation rules (here we go again...)

Dems never learn, it’s almost as though they want the economy to fail.

Actually, that would explain a lot.

Cutting spending by 35% should be an option

Not to the thieves in Washington.

The only thing Democrats bring to the table is taking more money from the people who actually pay taxes and with a VAT they just want to rape us all.

Congress has already told the deficit reduction commission that it is not allowed to look at SS cuts. But the fiscal hole in Medicare is 5 times as large. A fair and balanced assessment of the situation would provide him a full range of options, i.e.:
1) a package of adjustments to Medicare eligibility (means testing? higher retirement age?), benefits (change to a defined contribution instead of defined benefit?) and payment reforms (the rest of the market long ago shifted away from open-ended fee-for-service: it’s about time Medicare caught up) that would reduce costs enough to eliminate the deficit;
2) a companion package of revenue increases that could do the same;
3) an “al la carte” menu of cost reductions and revenue increases from which to design whatever mix of cost reductions and revenue increases is viewed as sensible.

My fear is that 1) will be considered a non-starter and that most of the commission’s focus will be on 2), trying to design a package of “acceptable” revenue increases so that cost cutting isn’t even needed.

Propose a VAT tax. Enact it into law quickly, before November.

won't happen. Look for it to happen in the Lame Duck session before Christmas. They'll have the bill written and the votes counted before anyone knows whats going on.
