Movie Gallery Inc., the owner of struggling movie rental chain Hollywood Video, is planning to close its remaining stores and liquidate as consumers are increasingly getting movies through the mail, vending machines and high-speed Internet connections.
The No. 2 rental chain behind Blockbuster Inc. filed a notice with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Richmond late last week that it will terminate its business operations after defaulting on a loan from one of its creditors.
An agreement filed with the court said the move to close more than 1,900 remaining stores is in the "best interests" of the company and its creditors. The agreement does not specify a time line. It must be approved by a bankruptcy judge.

It's unfortunate because their rentals were about $3.00. When I went over to Blockbuster, their videos were $5.00...........Forget it!
If they continue charging those rates they'll soon go under also..........
In my later years I'm starting to develope patience and utilizing my local library for any movies I may want to see. They're free there.............
Mr. Peel is a real videophile. AppleTV may have the nicest UI that we’ve seen, but its not good enough for video quality. If you like your movies, and want to see them in high-def, then avoid AppleTV- you’ll be disappointed.
My library is FREE but you are only limited to 15 at checkout.............
AppleTV only supports a very small subset of mp4 and mov encoding formats. You can get High-Def movies that will play on a Mac that will not play on AppleTV.
DVDs are on their way out, streaming will take over
I don’t know. I still want them in the best video format I can get them in 1080p whenever I want them. That means having the disc in my hands.
Is that what is happening? I know two have closed here in my city.
Or you could blame Netflix, which will be the death of Blockbuster next.
Unfortunately, they waited so long to react, they allowed their competition to grab a large share of their core market and get established before responding.
I think they have a chance to survive simply because they do cover all the current methods of delivery in a way that their competition doesn't.
When the Post Office ends Saturday delivery, that will have an impact on DVDs-by-mail, too.
Yes. But you still have to stand in line to get it out of the box!
Weren’t these your people ping, my little outmoded delivery system.
This just shows a tragic lack of creativity on their part. I can imagine them with a different business model that could have worked, just off the top of my head.
They could have taken on the “hardtop” movie theaters, by creating “multimedia” theater nightclubs, featuring not just unusual and interesting, not first run, movies, as well as live entertainment, dinner and dancing, as well as non-alcoholic drinks (because liquor licenses are very expensive.)
Set up like a multiplex theater, maybe showing five or six movies at the same time, “semi-private” for noise, if there is a live show in the main area. The overall concept being a “watering hole”, with lots of regulars who go there every night for recreation.
Legally, the only obstacle would be setting up a way to show for-profit DVD movies, paying only minimal royalties instead of exorbitant theater rates. Seriously, should a theater that shows “Casablanca” still have to shell out royalties as if it was a first run motion picture?
If they could overcome this obstacle, they might have survived as a corporation.
If you want to make a movie that does well-make it a conservative one. If you want to see a great quality drama, go foreign. The Germans and Scandinavians are on a real tear lately. Lives of Others, Counterfeiters, The Tunnel, Inheritance, After the Wedding, etc...all phenomenal flicks.
Nope blame "On Demand" video delivery over the internet (via Netflix and others) AND cable and Dish/DirecTV.
The business model has changed. Evolve or die.
Get a life Frantzie,.....Your community either has a High School library, or a public library or a county library, either of which were probably in existence before you were forced to learn how to read. This ain't your Obama or Federal "Take Over", its community funded services based on your local taxes...........
You should know that since you're probably relying on your library for information now after you had your TV disconnected...........
Yeah you don’t one cool thing I could find show that I miss and watch another time like NCIS if I miss episode on CBS I could find next day
We use Netflix and were starting to run into that problem: too busy and the DVDs we have on hand don’t always match our mood. However a few weeks ago they mailed us a disk that streams instant video to the TV through the WII. Still doesn’t have the depth of choices in the disk catalog, but has enough that if I crash on the couch I can find something I want to watch.
Is your cable plugged directly into the TV? Mine had to be - at first it was going through the VCR. It’s in the instructions, but my SO didn’t bother to read them!
Every time you borrow something from the local library the title holder gets a Lender’s Fee so you aren’t scamming anyone. Do you think libraries should function to destroy Big Publishying a well?
