Canandaigua, N.Y. - A Canandaigua City School District teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with students has been arrested.
Marla Gurecki-Haskins, 36, is charged with official misconduct and two counts endangering welfare of a child. She's also charged with disemminating indecent material to a minor, a felony.
According to court paperwork, she's accused of "engaging in text messaging of a sexual nature that encouraged a sexual relationship between the defendant and two 16 year old male students."
She's also accused of performing oral sex on a 17-year-old male student in her classroom during school hours.
Gurecki-Haskins was arraigned on the charges this morning. She pleaded not guilty and was released on her own recognizance.
She has been a certified special education teacher since 1996.
Police say their investigation is not over. They said they have 2,400 to 2,500 pages of material, most of it emails and text messages.

Maybe they’re related. I think I once read that Wiig is originally from the Rochester area of upstate New York. That’s only about 20 miles from Canandiagua.

Trust me. Female students are not all that innocent in the ways of the world. I knew some even in my day in high school who would seduce a male teacher without a second thought.
The point was the double standard that's applied in these cases. Regardless of where one stands on the morality of the situation, at the very least a teacher in this situation has abused his or her position of authority and betrayed a trust.
If it were anyone else, politician and aide, doctor and patient, male teacher and whoever, the tar would be boiling and the knife would be ground down (to dull it)....

A female student, pregnant with a teacher's baby is another problem entirely.

I think it’s less a case of situational ethics and more about who would be leaving who with the consequences.
If a 37 male teacher seduces a sixteen year old girl not only is she risking an unplanned pregnancy but she’s (IMHO) more likely to feel some sort of shame and/or regret about it given various factors, including societal mores and the way that boys and girls generally view intimacy at that age.
I can see where she could suit up for multiple play.

Teacher has been released on many times, but not enough for her liking.
By the looks of that grin I believe she may still be withholding crucial evidence.
I doubt that it’s occurred to anyone, but this may just be part of a new liberal program designed to discourage young males from skipping school.
These selfless warriors of education are doing all of this for the children.

I do hope she gets extra union benefits.
The male teacher would also likely be facing some pretty serious child abuse and maybe rape charges, along with getting branded as a sexual predator, or offender.
I don’t see too many threads where the guilty/not guilty crowd comes on and cheers about how the lucky girl got such a hot time.

Minors lack the legal capacity to give consent. Rule of law.
As a father, who was married while still a teenager, to another teenager, I can see different perspectives. (19 year old boy with 17 year old girl, in our case).
But here is a teacher in her 30s, teaching learning diabled children under the legal age of consent.
I say throw the legal book at her.
