This week's oil spill from the trans-Alaska pipeline totaled about 5,000 barrels, making it the third-largest spill ever from the 800-mile pipeline.
The new estimate of the spill size Friday compares with earlier estimates from the company that runs the pipeline that "up to several thousand" barrels spilled.
That company, Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., restarted the pipeline just before 5 p.m. Friday. Alyeska kept the pipeline shut down for more than three days after discovering the spill at Pump Station 9 near Delta Junction on Tuesday.
The shutdown forced North Slope oil companies to slash production to 8 percent of normal to keep the limited oil-storage capacity near the oil fields from filling while Alyeska dealt with the spill.
Lack of storage capacity at Pump Station 9 contributed to Tuesday's spill. During a routine maintenance check, power went out, causing a valve to open and channel oil into a storage tank, which overflowed. Oil streamed into a bermed secondary containment area. That containment area is lined with an impermeable liner and state and company officials say no oil escaped from the area.
The size of this week's spill from the pipeline is topped only by two other accidents on the pipeline:
In 1978, sabotage at Steele Creek...
In 2001, a Livengood man shot the pipeline with a high-caliber rifle...

A fart in a whirlwind.
Just an excuse to shut down the pipeline and finish off the oil industry.
Well then, I demand that we shut down the pipeline until we can determine who is at fault and bring them to justice. And there must be a moratorium on creation of new pipelines until we have fully determined what caused this obvious lack of concern by Big Oil and determine a means to stop the wanton destruction of our environment.
It’s the moral thing to do, after all...

Maybe drilling in the ANWAR North Dakota and Montana might be more eco friendly!
The last few weeks have not been pleasant, have they?
Another domestic terrorism attack Number #12
Women, children, minorities, and spotted owl owners hit the hardest.
Sarah Palin’s fault /sarc off
An obvious attempt to direct attention away from Obama’s failure in the Gulf spill.
Looks like they handled it nicely with little no environmental damage.
If it weren't for that mishap in the gulf, that heart attack last week and the replacement hip this week and the car accident on the way home from the hospital would have been tolerable.
Thank God we have the Messiah on site at the Gulf making sure everything will be alright tomorrow.
Most of the states have oil. Here in Michigan, all 68 counties have oil. Its low grade oil but it has its uses. Also the great lakes have natural gas under them.
The man I’m voting for congressman supports slant drilling under the lakes for that gas.
LOL!

I'm all in favor of drilling in ANWR. The Bakken field in North Dakota and Montana has had drilling and production for years. It is the reason North Dakota is already the 4th largest oil producing state.
Our industry has done better.
What's the latest assessment of the Three Forks - Sanish?
yah, a bad few weeks for the oil patch.
It has had some drilling and production. It is newer for development.
I have not seen a separate assesment of size.
A new oil strata below the Bakken layer has everyone's eye wide and bright. However there is the largest prairie dog colony in the world that must be protected! The Beefalo herd must be jerked along as well!
Happy BBQ day!
