The End of Empathy
Fox News ^ | 6/1/2010 | Dr Keith Ablow

Posted on 06/01/2010 12:54:20 PM PDT by Flying Circus

A University of Michigan Study of nearly 14,000 college students has found that they have less empathy than college students did during the 1980s or 1990s. In fact, today’s college students scored about 40 percent lower in empathy than their counterparts did 20 or 30 years ago.

Empathy is one of the most valuable psychological resources we have. It allows us to resonate with and respond to the suffering of others. It also allows us to care deeply about the fates of those we love, including our spouses and children. When empathy is destroyed, people are free (in a terrible way) not only to ignore the needs of others, but to perpetrate emotional or physical violence upon them.

Don’t lump all moms together! I have a lot of respect for working single moms raising children. They don’ really have a choice.

But I do agree, it’s ALWAYS best if mom can stay home with the kids at least until their old enough for school. Even if it means lowering your standard of living a bit.

If you don’t want to stay home and raise your own kids, don’t have ‘em!

SH**, “empathy” is what got us spending Trillions and Trillions on folks who just abuse it. I think we have Empathy Fatigue.

This “concern for humanity” is simply self serving narcissism to perpetuate the “everyone’s basically good” lie.

The reason they never examine the “unintended” consequences of the policies they promote is that in simply promoting the policies, their goals are accomplished - they feel good about themselves.

I never claimed that it did.

They are a mirror of the empathy their career moms showed at the daycare door.

Still, all single moms make the bad choices that harden the hearts of their children.

Coulter had some choice words for “single moms”,
especially those who are single and moms by CHOICE.

Their empathy receptors are saturated by long-term overdosing on political correctness.

Nailed it.

Is this what accounts for the Ted Bundy alienation?

Serial killers have no empathy for their victims. They seem to get a high from the killing of others. Maybe it is a power thing.

They (psychologists) have another name for it that is escaping me at the moment.

Evolution is a hoax. Untrue.

We are to respect our self and others for we were created in the image of God.

If we are just like the rodents, we are operating only on survival, and eating and mating. No joy. No wonder. No seeking for higher things, and no inventions, discoveries, cures, etc. Why bother. Man has choice, animals do not ... they are instinctive.

Your premise as stated is wholly wrong.

Dump the kids in day care - turn ‘em over to liberal teachers - and this is a surprise?

Yeah, I think too many here are willing to celebrate as if empathy and lefty progressivism MUST go hand in hand. But if you have empathy, it opens the door to morality itself. If you have morality, you can begin to have a code of individual human beings as inviolable, a sort of Kantian conception of refusing to treat people as means to ends. What Leftist politics invariably has done is led to a decline in the empathy necessary to fight off collectivism or authoritarian actions on the part of government. The only question many ask themselves is what is “effective” not what is just or the action of the government of a free people.

Remember, no empathy at all= psychopathy. That is NOT a good thing.

Also, when you hear of cases where people walk by someone hurt, callously join in with the murder of a human being simply because it seemed like something to do (or because a friend asked them to help, relationship overriding empathy for the stranger they are killing) or basically wish to use force against those they disagree with in order to impose themselves on that person (or group) that is the decline of empathy.

Psychopathy is marked by several behaviors or traits, including extreme narcissism, rage as the result of thwarted personal goals, duplicity, treating individuals as means to ends, deadened response to normal stimuli and a distinct and utter lack of empathy.

BTW, evolution is accurate, much of our own human behavior finds a more primitive analog in chimpanzee societies. The difference is that human beings are beings of reason as well as instinct. If we weren’t a part of everything else, how is it that we are sexually dimorphic creatures like others of that type and have the urge to mate in such a similar fashion, that we excrete waste and eat just as other species do. Only reason separates us, and with very low-IQ people (or babies and small children) even that faculty is much weaker and the individual resembles an intelligent animal to a great extent.

One need only sit down to read the great philosophers to know that we are different from animals and how, yet not forsaking the truth that we ARE related to them.

My Weakness is that movie. That has got to be one of the all time classic crime movies. My personal favorite It was such a well done movie. Just sorry DeNiro was killed at the end...Heat II with original cast (the others who made it out...) would have been great.
That was the first movie that DeNiro and Pacino physically shared a scene....(bit of trivia there)

As regards the military, it is a matter of training.

No empathy for enemy combatants.

Normal empathy for non-combatants.

I guess my dripping sarcasm in context with my posting history were lost on you.

My “premise” was making fun of those who believe such a thing as our accidental and irrelevant existance, and pointing out the logical consequences of that belief.

Who can tell anymore? There was no sarcasm tag ...

Actually your comments are very like the liberal comments made by the progressives here and on the radio and television everyday.. Over the top, completely skewed and apparently they believe the twisted things they say, or they are willing to play the fool to mess with peoples heads. Who can tell from the printed word only> No visual etc.

I did not bother to check you history and I think our paths have not crossed before now.

God help us in our day, in Jesus name, amen. Go well.

We were created to live on a planet with air and water and eat food. The animals mostly protect their young, until they can survive on their own, They do have communication by sounds and signs.

They are not created with intellect to imagine going to the moon and actually doing it. Or insight into where they came from or where they are going, and what do they want to do with their life, etc.

Romans 1:20-25 (American Standard Version)

“20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:

21 because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves:

25 for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

I’ve been studying them and their worldview, as well as my own, for quite a while. I know how they think and why they think what they do. So well, I can easily post a comment from their worldview.

I guess I’ll take your confusion as a compliment.

However, keep in mind, someone that truly has that worldview wouldn’t last very long around here.
