The prophet has spoken, and his words provide both hope and fear to the computer world.
In front of a rapt audience of tech executives at an industry conference on Tuesday night, Apple maestro Steve Jobs predicted the end of the PC era.
And what will replace the device that has transformed every aspect of business and society over the past 25 years? Well, it just so happens that Jobs believes the next phase of the computer revolution will be dominated by a device that looks a lot like the iPad tablet he introduced so successfully two months ago.

A basic flaw in Jobs’ reasoning.
With a PC, you sit in a more or less comfortable chair. You manipulate a mouse and keyboard, or not, at your leisure.
With an iPad, you have to hold something in your hands, and use your fingertip to do stuff. However, you can *do* things while you are using it. Like run on a treadmill, or walk around holding the thing, etc.
But that’s the simple point. Do you prefer leisure, or to do things while holding other things?
Me, I’m sitting here in a more or less comfortable chair. I am manipulating a mouse and keyboard every now and then. Otherwise I am slacking off.
He wants me to trade this for his thingy, so I can do things? I’ll pass.
Same with the treadmill. Lots of people love treadmills, too.
LearnsFromMistakes, you made a mistake using the url for the article as the title.
No fan of a tablet at all. Give me a good notebook any day. Not knocking a Mac, but Windows 7 works for me
Mistake repaired. :)
BWAHAHAHAHA
I bought my iPad to play games with. I also installed Logmein Ignition on it so that I can access my PC’s at home and at work!
Get a grip! The tablet PC has been around for close to 10 years in various forms. It can be a useful tool but is only one part of information technology and information exchange. Apple’s CET (Chief Executive Tool) has previously proclaimed that the IPhone and IPad were going to replace desktops and laptops. Jobs is good at propagandizing his pricy bling toys and the media is very good at hyping his pronouncements to help him out. On the positive side, the maxi-ipad will and has already spurred something of a revival of interest and development in making the tablet PC more viable in the market and that kind of competition is good.
OTOH when you’re traveling the ipad is the way to go. Yesterday on the plane just about everybody (in first class) was on their ipad. I thought there was a shortage but apparently not.
In the late 90’s the PC was also dying. When java broke onto the scene and the Internet was exploding there were many who predicted the demise of the PC and Microsoft’s dominance. Anyone remember “The Network is the Computer”?
Most people are not going to trade in their PC or Laptop for a tablet anytime soon.
I’d tend to believe Jobs. He actually has ideas and knows how to implement them.
Gates begs, borrows, and steals (the latter mostly) for his Yugo products.
And as far as microsoft goes - since I’ve dumped ALL my microsoft cr*p for OS-X and Linux machines, I’ve never had to rebuild....ever.
YATC. (Yet Another Thin Client).
I think you're right. Tables will continue to evolve and make inroads, especially for mobile workers but until networks are as stable, fast and secure as local storage the PC isn't dead.
That day will come but, as you say, not anytime soon.
A fine tool for traveling salesmen. How many traveling salesmen are there compared to employees and others who don’t travel so much?
It goes to the treadmill comparison. Most people are fairly sedentary, or they drive themselves, so can’t use an iPad enroute. While they can get away with walking around with a cellphone in their ear, carrying an iPad is more like carrying a laptop. While there are a lot of laptops, there are still a lot of PCs.
BS - The iPad is nothing more than an enlarged iPhone for boomers with bad eyesight and lots of money to burn.
In your dreams, Jobs.
Yeah ... and those of us with functional brains quickly learned: "Live by the network, Die by the network".
I haven’t really looked at tablets but I just don’t get it. You have to hold it up? I work with a laptop everyday teaching guitar, but I’ve got a guitar in my hands/lap. I don’t want to hold my laptop. I like it on the desk with the screen up facing me. The pointing and clicking is not a big deal. And anyway, the real leap isn’t going to be to tablets. The real leap will be when you can finally just say “computer, search youtube for taj mahal “queen bee” and it does it for you.
The real leap will be when you can finally just say computer, search youtube for taj mahal queen bee and it does it for you.
We may need a few years before that realization... ;)
The PC is dying?
Tell that to the millions of businesses that rely on PC’s daily for jobs that an Ipad could only dream of.
Jobs should test his theory: replace employees PCs in a fortune 500 with iPads and see what happens to productivity.
