ABC: Men arrested at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport were preparing terrorist attack

Monday, August 30th, 2010 at 9:23 pm | Monica Lawrence | By Monica Lawrence

AMSTERDAM (BNO NEWS) -- Two men were arrested aboard a United Airlines flight after landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Monday, ABC News reported.

The network, citing Dutch public prosecutor Ernst Koelman, said the men were arrested at the request of American authorities after the flight landed in Amsterdam. ABC said the men were subsequently charged with "preparation of a terrorist attack."

The two were allowed to board the flight at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago on Sunday night despite security concerns surrounding one of them, officials told ABC News, which identified the men as Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi, of Detroit, MI, and Hezam al Murisi.

One of them also did some suspicious things, like checking his baggage on one flight and then actually getting on another one.
You can't check baggage without a ticket can you? You're saying he had two tickets?
Also, do we know if the TSA actually allowed their luggage to be loaded on the plane - or was it held back?

These guys were on a trans-Atlantic flight and they knew exactly where they were landing. So, the US didn't need to arrest them until they might get away

I thought TSA is in security business, not in investigations. It is a little distasteful to use a planeload of passengers as test subjects on which the two may or may not demonstrate their intentions.

Humans are dangerous to themselves and to everything else not because we have weapons, but because we think in a certain way. Do you believe that someone like Bruce Lee needs a 10" knife to kill someone? A pair of martial artists can kill everyone on the airplane if they want to, before anyone will even understand what's happening.

It looks to me like the TSA simply screwed up; those guys raised lots of red flags, but the bureaucracy couldn't figure out what to do... and so they let them go. While they were en route the message propagated to some other bureaucrat who realized what just happened and then ordered the pair arrested as soon as they land.

Someone needs to go to prison for allowing this!

That someone is Janet Napolitano.

But don't expect that to happen. She will be on TV saying the system worked.

” a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle, three cell phones taped together, several watches taped together, a box cutter and three large knives.”

While none of this is illegal or dangerous, i seems like he was testing the bomb detection systems to see where the limits were.

I’d have called for a much closer inspection of other bags in case this one was a timewasting distraction while some less obvious threat was going through.

“They might have boarded the flight, but the individual seated next to them, or immediately behind them, was an air Marshall.”

He probably was wearing a suit, which immediately made the Muzzie suspect something/s;)

THEN I read a few posts later that they only found the strange stuff AFTER it was loaded, and the only reason then was that Soofi had taken a different plane. If this was a probing attack the enemy learned lots.

I laugh everytime I see the plexiglass display case in Newark that shows that I can’t bring my Poulan chainsaw on the flight.

Agreed, once it was determined the props found in Birmingham were not lethal, they were probably allowed to continue to see what they were up to, and how this would play out.

Doesn't thrill me in the least, I have flights to Schiphol next month and to Dubai in October. BTW, the US and Canada are pretty much the only countries I travel in that require one to remove his/her shoes for x-ray. I like Israel the best, where they look you right in the eye and ask you any number of questions. I think they would've had this stuff laid out on a table in a side room and pull these jokers in there and had a chat with them about their luggage contents.

The one on the right has very recently shaved off his mustache...look at the tell-tale pale skin where it used to be.
